Summary We are looking for a skilled Anesthesiologist, and will provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the medical center in compliance with Veterans Affairs and Veterans Health Administration Directives and The Joint Commission accreditation standards. Responsibilities The Anesthesiologist's duties include pre-operative patient exam and assessment, intra-operative care utilizing MAC, regional and general anesthesia techniques on ASA class 1 through 6 patients, and post-operative care including ventilator management within recovery area and ICU. The location of services includes all functional areas of the OR, PACU, ICU, ward, and out-of-OR procedural settings such as Electrophysiology, Interventional Radiology, Cath Lab, Gastroenterology, and the Pain Clinic as assigned. The Anesthesiologist may be part of a multidisciplinary critical care team and performs critical care related direct care including airway management and vascular access, and is expected to maintain ACLS certification. The staff Anesthesiologist may also be involved in program planning, objectives, policies, and standards essential to delivery of quality anesthetic and critical care. The staff Anesthesiologist will be directly responsible to the Chief of Anesthesia for clinical and administrative duties. The Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located in Richmond, Virginia, is a level 1a 349-bed facility offering primary, secondary, and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, intermediate care, acute and sustaining spinal cord injury, skilled nursing home care, and palliative care. The medical center has community-based outpatient clinics located in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Emporia, Henrico and Spotsylvania Counties, and a strong and mutually beneficial affiliation with the Virginia Commonwealth University. Residency programs exist in virtually all general and specialty areas of medicine, rehabilitation, surgery, psychiatry, and dentistry. The medical center is the host site for one of five Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers in the VA system of care, and a Parkinson's Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center (PADRECC). Duties will include, but are not limited to: Providing the patient or the patient's representative with an explanation of risks, benefits and alternative treatments of the anesthetic, giving the patient an opportunity to ask questions, and obtaining informed consent of the patient before performing an anesthetic or invasive procedure. Evaluates the patient to assess the health status, physical exam, lab values, and vital signs of the patient prior to surgery and uses this information to determine optimization needs. Appropriate notes will be written, timed, dated, and signed in the patient's medical record. Provides preoperative inpatient and outpatient consultations and Operating Room evaluations. Skilled in all aspects of intraoperative anesthetic care utilizing MAC, regional and general anesthesia techniques on ASA class 1 through 6 patients, and will be proficient in peripheral, arterial, and central venous peripheral access. Use the best available procedures and perform them at or above national statistical levels. Responsible for the post-operative care of the surgical patient in the PACU setting including ventilator management, hemodynamic support, and pain management. Duties include on-call coverage as requested by the Chief of Anesthesiology, and the Anesthesiologist is expected to provide appropriate airway management to critically ill patients throughout the hospital. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 7 AM to 5 PM; Duties may be require on-call or overnight coverage. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of the employee will be in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The position requires visual acuity (corrective lenses permitted), keen hearing (hearing aid permitted), clear speech, and manual dexterity of both hands. The position requires potentially long periods of continuous walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, and twisting. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. The employee may need to lift or carry up to 35lbs intermittently with assistive devices as needed and reach above the shoulders with both hands. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
