POSITION SUMMARY:
The Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing execution of department production demands, leading a team of machinists in setting up and machining production parts, proto@types, and tooling. This position is a working supervisor role and will spend at least 50 percent of the time machining parts to specifications using both manual and CNC machine tools such as lathes, diamond turning lathes, Swiss lathes, and mills. The supervisor will measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and drop gauges. This position is expected to drive continuous improvement in the department. This work will be completed by engaging with Engineering and Operations leaders to identify inefficiencies, brainstorm ideas, and execute on improvement projects. Possible improvements may include, but not be limited to, production scheduling, product flow and footprint refinement, work cell creation, 5S, work center staging, daily management meetings, and employee development plans. The shop mostly runs low-volume tight-tolerance parts. Competency in CNC programming using MasterCam is essential.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program CNC machines in MasterCam
Train operators on various machine shop skills, including running manual and CNC machines and programming CNC equipment
Autonomously manage departmental functions, including the implementation and management of continuous improvement actions
Manufacture and measure product with tolerance
Set up, adjust, and operate all the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations
Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process
Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances
Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work
Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts
Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions and determine need for adjustments or repairs
Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools
Set controls to regulate machining, enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine controls
Confer with engineering, management, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information, including input to estimation of new jobs
Establish work procedures for fabricating products using a variety of metalworking machines
Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
Comply with health and safety policies and procedures
Support company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions
Operate lathes and mills (both CNC and manual)
Perform various deburring of metal parts
Estimate new jobs
Monitor and edit Kronos timekeeping of the Machine Shop Team
Conduct daily review of production schedule to ensure on-time delivery
Monitor ECO distribution and change process as needed
Assist Manufacturing Manager with performance appraisals for machine shop employees
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of CNC mills, lathes, and Swiss lathe machine centers, including Tsugami Swiss Lathe operation, troubleshooting, and workflow support
Proficiency in MasterCam programming; familiarity with other programming tools used in the shop
Understanding of proto@type machining processes, setups, and sequencing
Knowledge of machining tolerances, including ultra-tight precision requirements (
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Understanding of tooling, fixturing, and setup fundamentals
Ability to perform and oversee measurement and metrology methods used in the shop
Skill in applying mathematical concepts, including algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, ratios, percentages, and conversions
Ability to apply common-sense reasoning to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form and resolve issues involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
Ability to organize work, prioritize tasks, and support production timelines
Ability to work independently and support others in independent technical work
Effective verbal and written communication, including the ability to write routine reports and speak effectively with employees, engineers, and other internal partners
Knowledge of proper machine shop maintenance and cleaning practices, including maintaining a safe, orderly, and well-functioning shop environment
Basic computer skills to support documentation, scheduling, and correspondence
Ability to lead, guide, and support machinists, providing technical direction and reinforcing safety, quality, and workflow expectations
CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent
Ten years related machining experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with CNC mills, lathes, and Swiss lathe machine centers, including proto@type machining work
Experience programming in MasterCam
Previous supervisory or team-lead experience preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is a site-based role
Willingness to work extended hours or weekends when necessary to support production demands
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Use eyesight for all aspects of the job daily
Operate Tsugami Swiss Lathes, CNC mills, manual mills, drill press, hand tools, computer, grinder, saws, precision fabrication equipment, measuring tools, and hand tools as required
Manipulate tooling, equipment, materials, and sharp objects safely in order to maintain, repair, and change tooling and materials in machine
Bend as necessary to lift, lower, push, pull, or operate and maintain equipment and accessories
Effectively transport tooling, equipment, materials, and sharp objects safely within the department
Safety glasses are worn to prevent eye damage
Ear plugs and gloves are also provided
Exposure to minimal fumes from alcohol and acetone
Safety equipment is provided
Must have prior safety training

PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATION OF JOB
Heavy Work: The ability to lift up to one hundred pounds with assistance occasionally and up to fifty pounds frequently, due to the weight of machinery and materials. This position requires standing to a significant degree in order to operate machinery safely.

Total Rewards
The compensation range for this position is $59,700.00 - $89,500.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
