Responsibilities Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and tractors used in facility maintenance, beach access, and emergency response. Identifies and resolves issues in engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical components using diagnostic tools and technical manuals. Performs scheduled maintenance and safety checks to ensure equipment reliability and compliance with OSHA and NPS standards, especially in remote or high-use areas. Modifies and maintains equipment to withstand corrosive salt air, sand infiltration, and high humidity. Applies protective coatings and uses corrosion-resistant parts where applicable. Services smaller equipment such as UTVs, ATVs, mowers, and generators used for trail maintenance, campground operations, and emergency access. Area Information: Position is within the Division of Maintenance and support the maintenance of park structures within the facilities maintenance and operations program for all three Outer Banks Group parks - Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial. Position duty station is located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Nags Head NC for Bodie Island maintenance. The Outer Banks are comprised by several towns including Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Buxton, and Ocracoke. The area is a beach destination. The beaches, as well as Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, provide exceptional recreational opportunities, such as fishing, surfing, boating, and many other watersports. There are several highly rated elementary, middle, and high schools and numerous extracurricular activities available for children. These towns all have homes for sale or rent and are within reasonable driving distance. The Outer Banks has many modern conveniences, such as grocery stores, retail shopping, banks, a hospital, and many restaurants. Cost of living on the Outer Banks is somewhat expensive as compared to other eastern North Carolina communities. Physical Demands: Physical effort is active, requiring walking, standing, lifting (up to 50 pounds) stooping, and working in cramped positions. Occasionally strenuous physical effort is exerted in climbing and carrying hand tools and in the repair of powered equipment. Working Conditions: Works in areas that are frequently dusty, dirty, and greasy and is exposed to solvents, noxious gases and fumes that could result in burns, infections, and cuts. Works indoors and outdoors and must be capable of working satisfactorily in adverse conditions of rain, snow, and in high insect density.
