GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician & Snowplow Operator for the Maintenance Program located in Wamsutter, Wyoming.
About Wamsutter: Known as"The Gateway to the Red Desert,"Wamsutter is located along Interstate 80 between Rawlins and Rock Springs, on the eastern edge of Sweetwater County. With a population of just 203 (2020 Census), Wamsutter offers a quiet, close-knit community surrounded by wide-open spaces and remarkable natural beauty.
If your idea of mingling with the locals includes spending time on the high desert watching elk, deer, and pronghorn, you'll feel right at home here. The surrounding area offers exceptional wildlife habitat for big game and provides endless opportunities to explore Wyoming's stunning scenery and unique geology.
Wamsutter is the largest settlement-and the only incorporated town-in the Great Divide Basin. Originally inhabited by the Shoshone and Ute tribes, the town was founded in 1868 to support the Transcontinental Railroad and was formally incorporated in 1914. Over the years, it has served as a regional hub for sheep ranching, wild horse roundups, uranium exploration, oil production, and natural gas development. Today, the natural gas industry continues to play a significant role in supporting both employment and community growth.
Wamsutter is perhaps best known as home to the world's only desert elk herd and possibly the largest pronghorn antelope herd in the world. Wildlife sightings are common-even within town limits-making nature a daily part of life.
