Position Summary

The Director of Defense, Baserunning, & Game Play will serve as the architect of a world class player development pipeline in the Washington Nationals organization. In collaboration with leadership and the Major League coaching staff, create a cross discipline and collaborative effort to build a sustainable system of player and staff development.

This role is ideal for a leader with strong instincts, strategic clarity, and the ability to scale a system and culture from the ground up - while staying grounded in our values and long-term vision.

Primary Responsibilities

Alongside key stakeholders, lead the development of a world-class Defense, Baserunning, & Game Play infrastructure, including:

Establishing a clear and actionable philosophy defining what the Nationals believe. This will serve as our scoreboard.

Defining how the Nationals will assess training and performance, create effective and cross-departmental programming, and execute training in a way that drives player value and contributes to wins at the ML level.

In concert with PD Leadership, selecting, evaluating, and developing a staff of Defensive Coordinators and Minor League Managers & Defensive Coaches.

Collaborating with Amateur, International, and Pro Acquisitions departments to ensure world class player evaluations and transitions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Proven track record in leadership roles within baseball or adjacent high-performance environments. Able to foster a high challenge / high support environment, where teammates are challenged, yet energized and empowered to work alongside them.

Demonstrated ability to build teams, lead through ambiguity, and operate with both humility and conviction.

Strategic thinker with strong communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.

Deep alignment with and promotion of the organization's values and vision.
