Summary Position located in Neurodiagnostic Laboratory, Neurology Department in the Specialty Care Service Line at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center. Provides specialized and complex neurodiagnostic testing, uses computerized EMG instruments and audio/visual monitoring equipment. The technician will help establish test protocols and research projects in cooperation with the VAMC and the Medical College of GA. Incumbent ensures compliance with VA regulations, JCAHO standards and other regulatory agencies Responsibilities Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: - Receives requests or instructions for procedures. - Interprets requests or instructions for medical or health care personnel. - Receives assignments for a variety of difficult Electromyography examinations. - Independently interprets and carries out the requests. - Secures patients' confidence and cooperation during procedures. - Independently explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate. - Varies procedure or position to adjust to patients' medical condition. - Orients the patient regarding the nature and purpose of the Electromyography (EMG)/Nerve Conduction Study (NCS). - Maintains good rapport with patient to ensure maximal relaxation and cooperation. - Performs direct patient support work to include collecting information from patients, providing personal patient care, and educating patients on pre-testing and post procedure activities. Answers patient's questions during procedures. - Uses appropriate motivation to relax patient due to painful stimulation given. - Assists medical staff with or performs electrodiagnostic procedures used to diagnose neurological medical conditions. - Performs the full range of complex electromyography procedures using specialized equipment that requires precise adjustments to respond to individual patient conditions or test sequences. - Serves as technical expert in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment and instruments. - Accurately measures and marks head, arms, hands, torso, legs and feet according to the international guidelines of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists. - Applies electrodes utilizing electrode techniques and monitors eye movement, in some studies respiration, and muscle movements. - Ensures that each electrode is securely placed to reduce impedance whether it is electrical and/or skin interference. - Obtains relevant medical information from patient. - Review patient's charts noting any clinical findings, results of other tests, and working diagnoses. - Observes patient during recording and makes proper notation on recording as to any symptoms, complaints or abnormal motor activity. - Archives records on digital, optical and compact disk retrieval systems and retrieves records as requested. - Enters CPT-4 codes for diagnosis for all visits and levels of care provided including evaluation and management codes. - Assembles patient records. - Files individual documents or information in records. - As part of quality assurance, review records for completeness. - Identifies problems or potential problems.
