Summary The incumbent serves as the Chief Radiologic Technologist at the Coatesville VAMC. The radiology service provides comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs. He/She has direct line supervisory responsibility for all Diagnostic Radiology Technologists, Medical Instrument Technologists,1 Quality Control Technologist, and two subordinate Lead Technologist and is a clinical coordinator for the students of the radiologic technology program for the Montgomery County Community College. Responsibilities The incumbent has direct supervisory responsibility for all technical aspects and patient care functions of the General Radiography, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and DXA sections. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Directs and is responsible for the performance of the individual technologists in every modality within the department of Radiology. He/she evaluates performance based on pre-determined standards and recommends promotions, reassignments or other status changes of subordinate personnel to the Service Chief. Provides direction to personnel in managing their respective sections and offers advice and guidance in handling unique problems. He/she resolves informal complaints of employees or customers and directs them in process of resolution for formal complaints. Advises employees of performance requirements and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting these requirements. Holds corrective interviews with employees regarding inadequate performance or conduct, as necessary. Such actions will be discussed with the ACOS of Clinical Support prior to formal action being taken. Ensures the monitoring of all activities within the radiology sections and takes appropriate action in order to assure their efficient and effective operation. Assures adequate technologist staffing for all sections on all shifts. Directs in-service training and radiologic student programs; ensures that employees maintain a high level of skill and meet at least the minimum level of continuing education required for certification and/or licensure. Participates in the development/revision, implementation and communication of goals, policies, and standards for the department. Coordinates the integration of the Radiology Department functions with other departments and aspects of overall patient care. Works with nursing and other clinical supervisors in addressing radiology service issues and to support the maintenance of high-quality patient care. Communicates with Administrative Officer, ACOS of Clinical Support and/or Radiologist, regularly, regarding ongoing and occasional occurrences in relationship to clinical and operational issues of the Radiology Department and outside of the immediate department. Participates in the compilation and analysis of data on departmental activities and prepares related reports to the Executive Assistant. Assists DSS with the analysis and updating of DSS and CPT code data relevant to technologists and supplies. Assists in the analysis and improvement of exams and wait times. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-12 Experience: At least one year of the following @types of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level. Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Assignment to this grade level is restricted to those serving as the chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs. Employees in these assignments plan and direct the radiologic technology program at active, affiliated medical centers with critical care and emergent inpatient services, and have full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of subordinate personnel, including GS-10 DRTs, at least one subordinate team leader or supervisor at the next lower grade level, and may include clerical or administrative support staff. At this level, the radiologic technology program typically includes the full variety of comprehensive and complex modalities. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (): i. Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties, including responsibility for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointments, awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; and identification of continuing education and training needs. ii. Ability to serve as a consultant to other facility personnel in evaluating and planning radiologic technology services for the most complex cases. iii. Ability to participate in research studies and/or as a consultant to others conducting research. iv. Ability to consult with staff and resident physicians through patient presentation, attending ward rounds, and specialty clinics and/or conferences, etc. v. *Ability to assess, plan, and evaluate the delivery of radiologic technology services at the facility. Preferred Experience: Proficiency with modern imaging systems and software, such as PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) and speech recognition software, is a clear preference. -Advanced experience in one or more of the following complex modalities is highly valued- CT, US, or MRI. -The ability to consult with radiologists to create and implement exam protocols.
