Job Summary and Qualifications
Position Summary:TheSurgical Technician II(STII)demonstratesthe knowledge and skills necessary toprovide assistanceduring surgical procedures performed in the department. TheSTIIassistsin the cleaning and preparation of the operating room suite according to Hospital standards and policies,participatesin the care and cleaning of OR equipment,and isexperienced in all aspects of aseptic technique.Assistsinsetting up the required equipment and sterilesupplies,supportsthe surgeon by providing instrumentationappropriate forthe taskas needed for their assigned cases, pulling cases as needed, andbreaksdown cases at the end of the procedure. He/she is knowledgeableregardinginstrumentation,equipmentand supply needs for all @types of surgical procedures. TheSTII performs delegated duties consistentwith his/her scope of practice,functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery,isrequiredto takecallas needed by the departmentand completes other duties as assigned.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Complies withhospital/departmental policies and procedures, i.e., attendance, mandatory education, safety, infection control, etc.
Performs patient care within the scope of training of the OR technician and under the direction of the RN.
Respects patient's rights bymaintainingpatient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
Demonstrates ICARE standards at all times.
Can recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
Attendsunitspecific education sessions.
Attends 80% of all mandatory meetings and in-services.
Reading and reviewing emails and other departmentcommunication.
Prepares for each procedure and/or surgery.
Canorganize work andutilizetime efficiently.
Has knowledge ofa safetransfer of the surgical patient.
Demonstrates knowledge of the step-by-step positioning of the patient on the OR table.
Maintains a clean OR suite forthe surgicalpatients.
Maintains a safe environment for the surgical patients by checking the conditions and cleanliness of equipment before procedure.
Demonstrates working knowledge of the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for all cases.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance manuals.
Performs intra-operative management of assigned procedures.
Initiates andmaintainsa sterile field throughout surgical procedures by adhering to the principles of asepsis.
Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately at all times and monitors other staff for compliance.
Assistsin preparation and draping of patient and operativesite.
Anticipates needs ofsurgeon.
Assiststhe circulating nurse inmaintainingcorrect needle, sponge, and instrument counts.
Appropriately handles all specimens.
Demonstrates knowledge of and correctprocedurein managingpatientwith system specific procedures.
Assumes responsibility for supply and equipment managementappropriate toposition and in compliancewithdepartmentstandard.
Determinespriority in supply and instrumentneeds and ensures availability.
Assistsinmaintenanceof instruments and equipment by properutilization, cleaning, care,and sterilization.
Removes andreportsall damaged or unsafe equipment.
Assistswith post procedure workloadincluding:cleaning room between procedures, putting away all unused supplies & setting up for the next procedure.
Activelyparticipatesin OR turnover.
Position Requirements
Licensure/Certification/Registration:State of Colorado Surgical Registryrequired.Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Current CST Certification from NBSTSA preferred.
Education:Graduation from an accredited program for Operating Room Technicians.
Experience:Entry level tooneyear of experience as a SurgicalTechnicianpreferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Basic to advanced knowledge in the scrub role and multiple surgical specialties. Demonstrates good organizational skills. Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers.Is authorized tohandle medications on the sterile field includingsyringes, needles, etc. and is accountable to the registered nurse for oversight of this practice. Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliancetoall safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and Rose Medical Center.
