SUMMARY
Perform ophthalmology services in the Refractive Laser Center. Assist with all aspects of patient care including but not limited to screening and checking-in patients, escorting them to treatment areas, and performing initial medical screening of patients including history, distance and near visual acuity with and without correction or pinhole, pupillary light reflex, applanation tonometry and manifest refraction.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform refractive surgery services. When the services are not required, or the technician's services are more urgently required elsewhere, the technician may be assigned by the Chief of Ophthalmology Services or designated representative to provide support in ophthalmology.
Assemble, maintain, and operate medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic equipment.
Perform ophthalmic studies including autorefraction, keratometry, tonometry, visual field test, pachymetry, ophthalmic photography, and be able to establish a sterile field and assist with minor surgical procedures.
Accurately prepare room and patient for examinations, therapeutic measures and procedures assuring all needed equipment and supplies are available prior to the start of the exam.
Take, monitor, and record physiological measurements.
Perform medical treatment, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per extender treatment protocols.
Prepare and administer medications under the supervision of a nurse or health care provider.
Chaperone patients, when necessary, by escorting them to various offices or clinics.
Review patient medical records and maintain or assist with appropriate and accurate health record storage and retrieval systems.
Prepare and submit administrative data, when required.
Provide patient/parent education, primarily discussing formal risk of laser surgery, as requested.
Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift. Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
Provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
May be required to assist with ophthalmology day to day operations.
Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school Diploma or equivalent required.
Must be current in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation at all times during contract performance.
Must have knowledge of medical terminology to interpret departmental instructions/guidelines and to provide instruction.
Must have at least two (2) years' experience in the last four (4) years as an ophthalmology assistant.
Must be trained and have the ability to use and maintain an autorefractor, phoropter, tonopen, visual field machine, corneal topographer, pachymeter, specular microscope, ophthalmic photography equipment, slit lamp, and personnel computers.
Must be proficient with data entry into Microsoft Excel.
Must possess and maintain current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS). This Certification must be current at all times, at no additional expense to the government.
Must obtain and maintain the site's required health screening and immunization requirements.
Must be able to read, understand, speak, and write English well enough to communicate effectively.
Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
Must obtain and maintain all required documents, certifications, licenses, etc. listed on the credentialing checklist, sent by Katmai's Credentialing Specialist, for this position for initial hire.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Certification of an ophthalmic assistant from Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel accredited program in Ophthalmology preferred.
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant from accredited program preferred.
Ability to maintain a professional manner and display a positive cooperative attitude.
WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time shifts, which may include nights or weekends. After hours call is not required, but schedule may change, and overtime hours will be determined by clinic leadership.
TRAVEL
All Market contractors are subject to working at a duty location at any of the MTFs or associated sub clinics within the Colorado Military Health System (CMHS).

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities and abilities. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, latex, radiation or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infection or diseases from contact with patients. Work is highly social with patients and can be stressful with a high emotional element. Decisions made may substantially impact patients and their families.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking, or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. Pay range: $25.00 per hour.
