Generous Sign-On Bonus:
Surgical Technologists with 0-1 Year of experience:
$10,000 with a 2-year commitment to UPMC
$12,000 with a 3-year commitment to UPMC
Surgical Technologists with 1-2 years of experience:
$12,000 with a 2-year commitment to UPMC
$17,000 with a 3-year commitment to UPMC
On-Call Pay:
Scheduled on-call standby rate: $3.40/hour
If called in during scheduled on-call hours, you are paid for a minimum of 2 hours, even if the procedure gets canceled!
After 40 hours worked, all additional hours are paid 1.5 times hourly rate.
Shift Details
Orientation: Completed on 8 or 10-hour shifts (6:30 AM-3 PM or 6:30 AM-5 PM), depending on preceptor.
Post-Orientation:
Start times include 6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:00 AM, and 10:30 AM.
Staff may request 10 or 12-hour shifts after orientation; approval based on department needs.
In order to work 12-hour shifts, employee must be competent in all service lines.
Weekend, Holiday, & Call Rotation
Holidays:
Staff receive one major holiday call (12 hours) and one minor holiday call (12 hours) per rotation.
Rotation list is updated as new staff join and is not seniority based
Typical Call Shifts:
Saturday 7 PM-6:30 AM Sunday, Sunday 7 PM-11 PM.
Monday-Thursday 7 PM-11 PM, Friday 11 PM-6:30 AM.
Current Rotation:
Staff typically have one weekday call and one weekend call OR two weekday calls in a 4-week schedule.
Call rotation is subject to change at any time based on staffing and department needs
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of a registered nurse, the Surgical Technologist performs advanced tasks in the Operating Room to assist the surgical team. This role involves working on complex surgical procedures within at least two specialties and ensuring a safe, sterile environment for every patient.
Responsibilities
Pre-Operative Duties:
Prepare the operating room by arranging sterile instruments, equipment, drapes, and solutions.
Assemble sterile and non-sterile equipment; check and adjust equipment for proper function.
Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
Transport and position patients on the operating table; assist with sterile gowning and gloving.
Intra-Operative Duties:
Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants efficiently.
Hold retractors, cut sutures, sponge or suction operative sites, and assist with counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.
Handle specimens for lab analysis and assist with dressings.
Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to the surgeon per policy.
Post-Operative Duties:
Help transfer patients to recovery; clean and restock the operating room.
Maintain a clean, safe environment through strict adherence to aseptic technique and safety protocols.
Additional Responsibilities:
Serve as a resource for staff; precept students and new employees.
Participate in committees and interdisciplinary teams.
Collaborate with clinicians to share new knowledge and best practices

Requirements
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Training:
Completion of a Scrub Technician program or a related Health Science course required, OR
Previous experience as an Operating Room (OR) Technician may be substituted.
Preferred:
Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community/junior college, vocational school, university, hospital, or the military.
Experience:
0-2 years of surgical technology experience.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical environment.
Assist surgeons and nurses during procedures by passing instruments and supplies.
Ensure proper handling and care of surgical instruments and equipment.
Comply with all safety and infection control standards.
Limit medication handling to distribution to the nurse as per policy.
Compliance - Pennsylvania Law (House Bill 81)
Effective: December 27, 2020
To qualify, candidates must meet one of the following:
Completed an accredited surgical technology program and maintain certification, OR
Completed an appropriate military training program, OR
Hold certification from an accredited program, OR
Was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before December 27, 2020, OR
Worked as a surgical technologist at another healthcare facility within two years prior to December 27, 2020.
Continuing Education:
Certified individuals: Follow credentialing organization requirements.
Non-certified individuals: Complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years.
Grandfather Clause:
Staff employed before December 27, 2020 or within two years prior are not required to have certification.
New graduates from accredited programs may work for up to six months before certification, but must become certified within six months of program completion.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Act 33 with renewal
Act 34 with renewal
Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
