Building/Electrical Inspector

Reports to: Chief Building Official Location: City Building

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Pay Range: Level 4

General Statement of Duties

The Building/Electrical Inspector administers and enforces Ohio Building Codes (OBC), Residential Code of Ohio (RCO), and reviews plans for residential permits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Not All-Inclusive)

Administers, enforces and interprets OBC, RCO, and local ordinances.

Assists contractors and general public in determining compliance issues and meeting building codes and local ordinances.

Conducts plan reviews and inspections to ensure compliance with building codes applicable to heating, electrical, general construction, etc. for residential and commercial projects.

Review building codes and guidelines for construction for residential and commercial construction to ensure compliance to latest standards.

Prepares and maintains detailed reports and documentation of inspection activities.

Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Employee must have a knowledge of modern office practices and procedures and computer related software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.

Must have the ability to communicate concisely and clearly with other City employees and the general public. Must have the ability to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instruction and cooperate with co-workers on group projects.

May be required to lift 30lbs+/-, bend down, reach up, climb a ladder, and generally will be working outside or on construction sites or in an office environment utilizing a computer, calculator, copy machine, telephone, etc.

May be required to work in adverse weather conditions.

May be required to work overtime on weekends and outside of normal working hours.

Acceptable Experience, Training and Additional Requirements:

Employee should have completed a post-secondary education in related field, or at least four (4) years experience in building design and construction and/or building inspection. Ideal candidate will have both BI & ESI certifications. If certified in either BI or ESI only, the candidate must be able to obtain the second certification within 6 months of hire.

Employee should have general working knowledge of plumbing, heating, and air conditioning, electrical and general construction code and working knowledge of drafting and survey methods

Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, a commitment to the overall mission of the City and a cost conscious approach to assigned tasks. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio's Drivers license.
