Job Duties: Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:
Function: Tree Removal/Roadside Vegetation Maintenance:
Performs tree inspection and removal to ensure crews meet goals and timeframes established by project needs and achieve project/program objectives.
Ensures proper maintenance, safe operation and monitors proper performance of specialty equipment used for tree removal (i.e., aerial lift truck, chainsaws, chippers, skid steer with/grapple attachment, stump grinder, log loader, Class 33 and Class 35 trucks) effectively in a timely manner to ensure safety and maximum equipment life.
Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides - installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.
Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.
Removes all objects from roadways, rights-of-way, and roadsides including encroachments, farming debris, for sale signs, vehicles for sale; performs all work associated with accidents (traffic control), spill cleanup, rut repair. dead deer. etc.
Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual to ensure the safety of the employees and the traveling public.
Performs mowing activities including media top cuts and sight corners, weed whipping and hand mowing around signposts, etc.; vegetation control - weed or brush control, biological control and control burns, spraying unwanted vegetation and insect control.
Performs rest area maintenance including all work done to rest areas, wayside rests and scale areas. Includes building and grounds maintenance, vegetation control, and parking surface repairs.
Function: Snow and Ice
Driving and operating a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice duties, maintaining roadways for snow and ice control which includes removing snow from roadways and shoulders; applying anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removing frozen ice and materials from culverts; performing night or dawn patrols; preparing and inspecting winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment, and cutting edges and sanders.
Minimum Qualifications
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:
One (1) year of experience performing tree maintenance activities which include (tree removal and inspection of diseased trees).
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no airbrake restriction and a tanker endorsement.
Ability to acquire a tree inspector certification within six (6) months of hire.
Ability to obtain a bucket truck certification within six (6) months of hire.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work nights; may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis. The employee will drive motorized vehicles in on and off-road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, and squatting). The employee will occasionally operate machinery and equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may need to infrequently move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility and feet from injury. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate through writing, speaking and hearing, and also able to communicate with the use of electronic communication equipment, i.e., telephone, 2-way radio, computer, etc.
Additional Requirements
The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCT), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
