Job Summary
DEFINITION
Operates light vehicles and specialized motorized equipment to pull refuse bins out of subterranean garages and commercial or residential areas. Picks up, hauls and disposes of bulky items and heavy trash.
SUPERVISION
Receives direct supervision from a Resource Recovery and Recycling Supervisor and/or designee who makes detailed work assignments, frequently reviews work in progress, and evaluates assigned tasks and work. Exercises no supervision over staff.

Representative Duties
Responds to work order assignments to pick up bulky and large trash items from residential and commercial customers.
Follows assigned route by utilizing a route sheet; removes, and places bins back according to assigned route sheet.
Loads, hauls and disposes of trash, debris and heavy objects.
Operates a variety of refuse collection equipment such as stake bed trucks and bin trucks in the collection of commercial and residential refuse.
Performs heavy manual work in the daily collection of trash. May empty containers into designated refuse trucks.
Compacts the refuse in the collection vehicle when necessary to ensure good loads and prevent littering of streets.
Responds to reports of damaged refuse and recycling containers and performs repairs using a variety of hand tools. Responds to calls on two-way radio.
Provides customer service in the field.
Performs a daily safety check and routine servicing of assigned refuse collection vehicles.
Prepare simple reports.
Address safety-related issues on the operation of collection vehicles and/or new equipment.
Identifies and reports damaged containers.
Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge of:
Safe work practices and procedures.
Basic vehicle and equipment maintenance.
Traffic laws.
Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to:
Safely and properly operate power and specialized equipment.
Drive and operate collection equipment safely in variable weather conditions and narrow and tight spaces.
Perform physical labor for sustained periods.
Read maps, charts, route sheets and gauges.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Work in narrow and tight spaces.
Lift and carry heavy objects.
Learn applicable rules, regulations and procedures.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.
Provide effective customer service.
Skill in:
Reading, writing, and communicating at an appropriate level.
Education, Training and Experience:
High school graduation or the equivalent.
One year of recent, paid work experience performing maintenance or repair work which has included heavy physical labor. Recent experience in the solid waste field is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C driver license.
Working Conditions :
Work is primarily performed outdoors in the field in seasonal climate and variable weather conditions. Outside work is performed around moving objects, vibrations, noise, dirt, dust, and slippery surfaces and various odors. Physical demands include walking, standing, reaching, carrying, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects. May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays and during emergencies, as assigned

If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.
Background Investigation:
Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
