About the this unit:
Support Services works to interface with internal customers, community agencies, vendors, and community groups to meet the goals and objectives of support functions, hospital operations, and safety and security at CMHHIFL.
The Safety Department exists to maintain the safety and security and transportation needs of the CMHHIFL hospital. Duties of the Safety Department include maintaining a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors, providing assistance to the clinical staff in the various @types of patient treatment programs, assisting with the management of aggressive/assaultive individuals, and monitoring and evaluating the impact of applicable laws and regulations. The Safety Department staff follows accepted practices including policies and procedures. The department supports patient care and the safety of buildings, grounds, equipment, occupants, and internal physical systems. This work unit reports and resolves situations that pose a threat to life, health, or property.
Job Assignment / Purpose of Position:
Briefly summarize the purpose of this position.
To supervise and assist in provision of a safe environment in which patients of civil commitment may be transported to/from on-grounds and off-grounds appointments, hospital activities, and other meetings and/or required transportation needs by oversight of trained personnel. CSO Transportation staff will provide necessary movements to and from medical appointments, cafeteria treatment mall, clinical activities, court visitations, personal appointments of therapeutic needs, in partnership with appropriate additional hospital personnel/nursing/clinical staff as required. Visitation support will be provided as available.
Job Duties:
Supervision of Communications Staff and Transport Team Staff:
As supervisor of the Communications/Operator positions within the Safety Department, this position ensures the appropriate staffing patterns exist for continued operations of this essential position. Assurance of adequate Operator coverage, providing on-going feedback and development of staff in accordance with CMHHIFL practices, protocols, policies, and procedures. Supervisor manages and maintains skill and expertise in the technologies utilized at the Operator's post.
Organizational Accountability:
Through all communications and behaviors, the position demonstrates, supports and contributes to a healthy, positive and respectful cultural climate throughout the facility. This supervisor ensures staff members are doing the same. Communicates with internal/external customers, residents, subordinate staff and co-workers in a professional manner, ensuring to communicate with respect and dignity. Adhere to the CDHS Code of Conduct and all CMHHIFL and hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Be aware of and adhere to prevailing legal standards, CDHS Policy and implementing procedures. Adhere to CDHS, CMHHIFL Procedures regarding work schedule, timekeeping and leave practices. Performs continuous supervision of clinical safety and security of the Transport Team staff, and patients being moved to scheduled appointments and completes all duties assigned. Performs continuous supervision of the Operators and completes all duties as assigned.
Scheduling:
Scheduling coordination responsibilities of the Transport Team and Communications/Operators.
As the supervisor of the Transport Team, ensure on-going communication with Nursing Department and Clinical Staff to provide scheduling services needed for CMHHIFL patients. Ensures appropriate relaying of information between Nursing Department and Transport Team staff. Supervises staffing patterns for completion of patient-related transports. Ensures the reservations of transportation are completed for all patient-related transports. Ensures communication amongst staff in different departments maintains a positive, pro-active approach to avoid missed transports. As the supervisor of the Operators, must ensure appropriate communication with the Safety Department for any coverage responsibilities given the 24/7 nature of the positions and emergency operations associated, in addition to the cross coverage coordination with the CYSO team within the Safety Department.
Transport and Documentation:
Functions as a member of the Transport Team as needed and ensures appropriate staffing patterns are managed. Ensures the development of appropriate documentation and databases are kept for tracking of Transports. Completes regular auditing of documentation as required related to all Transports. Works with the Appointing Authority and/or Director of Safety to ensure that documentation standards meet any accreditation standards or other as required.
Crisis Management Response:
Maintains currency in training in CPI skills as patient transport team member. Performs supportive actions and approved physical intervention techniques, as necessary during patient transports. Exercise sound judgment and emotional control when evaluating possible risk while taking into consideration the physical and mental well-being of all patients. Participate in defusing and debriefing all incidents. Actively uses effective communication skills, Verbal Defense Interventions (VDI) skills and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) skills when interacting with patients and staff in a positive and respectful manner.
Other Duty as Assigned:
Determined on a case-by-case basis for other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position
Substitutions:
Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
College education in a behavioral health and/or justice related field.
Experience working with adjudicated and/or detained within a secure residential facility and/or a behavioral health setting;.
Experience utilizing verbal de-escalation and motivational techniques.
Experience in motivating and managing staff
Experience in scheduling for a 24/7 entity as a supervisor across multiple shifts
Strong organizational skills
Strong attention to detail
Experience in transportation within a hospital setting.
Highly Desirable Competencies

Successfully pass all modules of the CMHHIFL New Employee Orientation core curriculum to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
· Possess the physical ability to successfully complete CPI and CPR;
· Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
· Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
· Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for using a defensive tactic;
· Kneel on one or both knees and stand up again with multiple repetitions;
· Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety;
· Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
· Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
· Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
· Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English, both verbally and in writing;
Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
