GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated Fuel Tax Examiner to assist in administering the state's fuel tax laws and ensuring the complete and accurate reporting of fuel transactions. In this role, you will work closely with suppliers, distributors, importers, and exporters conducting business in Wyoming to verify compliance, review documentation, and help ensure that all taxes owed are properly collected. Your efforts directly support the allocation of vital revenue used to preserve, maintain, and enhance Wyoming's transportation system. This position plays a key part in protecting the integrity of fuel tax reporting and contributes to sustaining the infrastructure that keeps Wyoming's communities and economy moving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
Performs technical tasks, including the licensing and registration of vendors, contractors, and wholesalers.
Reviews complex tax returns for accuracy and determines the appropriate disposition based on the status of the return.
Contact vendors to discuss and resolve problems with the vendor accounts to include delinquency issues, rejected returns, lien filings, missing information, and other account issues.
Enters and adjusts audits upon receiving preliminary findings from the Department of Audit.
Accepts, fulfills and records, and processes assessments on Jenkins Act information.
Balances, reconciles, analyzes, interprets, and audits tax returns.
Generates management reports.
Maintains tax information databases.
Generates legal documents that are appealable.
Issues tax assessments (under close supervision).
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Ability to interpret and apply complex laws, rules, and regulations.
Experience in tax compliance, auditing, accounting, or regulatory review (preferred).
Familiarity with fuel tax programs, financial documentation, or government processes.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with industry partners and internal teams.
Strong problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment.
Demonstrated initiative and commitment to public service.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and mainframe computer programs.
Knowledge of interviewing and investigation techniques.
Knowledge of methods used in the determination of liability.
Knowledge of basic mathematics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Finance)
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Tax Examination)
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Tax Examination)

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment.
Prolonged periods of sitting, computer use, and data entry are required.
Occasional lifting of office materials and files up to 25 pounds may be necessary.

Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus
Temporary employees accepting a full-time position.
Current employees are accepting a promotional opportunity, so recruitment must be opened to the public.
One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.
Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
