Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Construction Field Engineer - HVAC and BAS Subject Matter Expert (SME). As a vital member of the Institutional Project Delivery (IPD) team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. This role serves as the critical link between Superintendents, Inspectors, Project Management, and Engineering Services to transform design concepts into reality. Leveraging deep construction expertise, you will help drive projects through scope and design definition, pre-construction planning, quality assurance, and on-site execution. Your work ensures every project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and safety, consistently producing exceptional construction outcomes that meet design intent, comply with national codes and standards, and exceed user expectations.
Note: This position will be filled at the Construction Engineer 2/Construction Engineer 3 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Construction Engineer Level 2 ($85,900- $139,900)
Construction Support Responsibilities:
Stop work if continuing is unsafe or compromises security
Prepare checklists and other project documents
Prepare or direct the preparation of field material purchase requisitions, including estimating quantities and material takeoffs
Review work packages for completeness
Review project design and engineering documents to ensure completeness
Assist Construction Supervision in planning construction methods and procedures
Interpret design drawings and prepare construction field sketches
Field verify construction materials for compliance and storage requirements
Inspect construction work for compliance with drawings, specifications, and codes
Liaise between Construction and Engineering to resolve technical issues
Assist with review and coordination of RFI responses
Prepare field change request documentation and coordinate disposition through engineering
Maintain records of quantities and construction inspection work, and may prepare material and installation portions of subcontract bid packages
Provide quality oversight of installers on a periodic basis
Prepare daily progress reports and keep supervisors informed on assigned task progress
Monitor cost versus budget performance during construction
Verify construction work for compliance with drawings and specifications
Perform tracking of deficiencies for assigned projects
Assist in the generation of punch lists
Assist Senior Construction Engineers with their functions and perform other directed tasks
Construction Engineer Level 3 ($94,500 - $154,600)
In addition to what was outlined at the level 2 position, at the level 3 position you will have the opportunity to:
Reviews project engineered design drawings, project related vendor drawings, and installation instructions for completeness and constructability
Prepares cost estimates
Assist with Start-up and Turnover
Direct and mentor Junior Construction Engineers in their functions and tasks
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Construction Engineer 2:
This position requires effective professional communication experience and a strong working knowledge of construction planning and execution methodologies; modern construction means and methods; safety practices; and the maintenance/installation of commercial building and industrial process systems
Such expertise is typically developed through extensive on-the-job experience supporting the execution of commercial and industrial construction projects and a recognized degree in engineering, construction management, or project management; or specialized coursework or training acknowledged by recognized certification or licensure
Additional Job Requirements for Construction Engineer 3:
Strong working knowledge of quality assurance systems; risk identification and mitigation; design control processes; and schedule recovery strategies
Education/Experience at Construction Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Scientific discipline from an accredited institution and a minimum of 5 years of extensive work experience leading to the thorough understanding of the knowledge described above; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education or certifications.
Education/Experience at Construction Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Scientific discipline from an accredited institution and a minimum of 8 years of extensive work experience leading to the thorough understanding of the knowledge described above; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education or certifications.
Desired Qualifications:
Extensive experience in the design, installation, and/or maintenance of HVAC and BAS Systems
Extensive experience in programming BAS Systems
Documented completion of a nationally accredited apprenticeship program
Documented experience working as a journeyman and/or foreman
Documented experience in successfully managing construction personnel
Nationally accredited certification as a fire alarm, electrical, structural, mechanical, and/or plumbing Inspector
Professional experience with LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
