Description:
The Lead Retail Pharmacist accepts the responsibility and accountability for the accurate control of and appropriate dispensing of all prescription and non-prescription medications, as required by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Ensures appropriate counseling of patients regarding their medications. Supervises the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. Leads colleagues in standards of quality of care, inventory control, and intra and interdepartmental communications.
Assists with selecting, developing, and maintaining a team of competent staff. Holds self and team accountable for achieving the highest level of quality of care, customer service, and employee satisfaction, and recognizes the contribution for desired results. Driven to meet and exceed customer expectations.
SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:
Under the general direction of the Retail Pharmacy Supervisor, plans, organizes and manages retail pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other support personnel. Serves as a leadership resource for those working in the retail pharmacy. Assumes a proactive role in improving quality.
Patients served range in age from newborns to geriatrics. Customers include departmental employees, peers, physicians and their office staff, vendors, patients, families, visitors, etc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a Accepts responsibility for the timely, accurate, and appropriate preparation of medications and pharmaceutical supplies, using accepted procedures to fulfill prescription orders issued by physicians, dentists, and other qualified providers
Performs duties with flexibility, adapting to changing schedules and needs of the customers, prioritizing workload accordingly
Manages schedule for pharmacists, technicians, and support personnel at site of responsibility.
Manages timecards and approves payroll for pharmacists, technicians, and support personnel at site of responsibility.
Counsels' patients receiving prescription medications, non-prescription medications, devices and supplies, as appropriate while protecting their health and drug information.
Provides information to medical staff concerning all aspects of clinical pharmaceutical
information pertaining to the patients care and well-being, keeping in mind the
confidential nature of all such information and communication.
Monitors patient medication therapy for pharmaceutical care parameters and documents (as
required) the appropriate findings, recommendations, interventions and outcomes.
Coaches and maintains positive behaviors, approaches, attitude, and commitment to interpersonal service toward patients, visitors, customers and co-workers.
Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to pharmaceutical services
Shares in the "on-call" and weekend rotation responsibilities.
Coordinates colleague training, development, and education in area of responsibility for all colleagues, pharmacy residents, students and interns.
Completes colleague evaluations for area of responsibility annually.
Recruits, screens, and participates in the interview and selection of new pharmacy colleagues.
Assists with coordinating student and resident rotations and activities.
Attends meetings and participates in committees as appropriate.
Actively leads training of new colleagues.
Ensures all state and federal laws surrounding the appropriate security and control of and dispensing of medications are followed in area of responsibility.
Responsible for inventory maintenance, ensuring appropriate inventory levels, ordering, and security of inventory including CII perpetual inventory logs and yearly inventory counts.
Actively leads and participates in quality and problem-solving activities with other pharmacy staff and other hospital departments.
Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.
Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.
Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
Performs other responsibilities as requested by Retail Pharmacy Supervisor or Pharmacy Director.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal office environment where there are relatively few physical discomforts due to dust, dirt and noise.
In an eight-hour day, may walk/stand six to eight hours.
Must be able to occasionally (6-10% of work time) lift/carry objects weighing approximately 35 lbs.
Associate's job requires occasional (10% of work time) squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, frequent bending/stooping, and reaching above shoulder level.
Must frequently (21-50% of work time) maintain high level of concentration with many interruptions and attain desired deadlines.
Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level.
Must be able to speak and hear speech.
Must be able to travel on occasion to other worksites and training seminars.
Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):
Education:
Completion of the requirements for a B.S. or Pharm.D. in Pharmacy at an accredited college of pharmacy is required.
Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.
Licensure:
Must be a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Iowa in good standing or eligible for registration.
Maintains licensure in additional states as required based on contracted facilities outside of Iowa.
Additional Functions :
Registers with Iowa Board of Pharmacy as PIC and assures all aspects of that responsibility are followed.
Experience:
Previous leadership experience is preferred.
Previous practical experience and/or certification in areas related to practice site are preferred.

Preferred certification in Immunization Administration.
