Summary This Medical Technician position is in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. The position serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory, specimen receiving in Central Receiving department, and processing technician in the Send Out area. This position is to cover Ann Arbor Medical Center and rotate to the CBOC location such as Canton on a as needed basis. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-05. At the GS-04 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-05. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. Major duties and responsibilities include: Follows procedures for patient identification, sample procurement, and specimen labeling. Performs routine venipuncture specimen collections from patients. Follows laboratory procedures for collecting specimens in the appropriate container. Controls the physical condition of samples and responds to time factors to ensure that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained. Provides education to patients for proper collection techniques. Prepares samples for testing to include labeling, centrifugation, decanting and aliquoting, etc. Maintains adequate supplies for all phlebotomy and specimen procurement procedures. Answers incoming calls for the laboratory service - finding and relaying accurate information or referring the caller to technical personnel. Performs standard diagnostic tests/procedures such as bleeding time, occult blood, urine dipstick, pregnancy test, fingerstick glucose. Performs sterilization on the autoclave, and cleans glassware and other reusable items. Identifies and appropriately responds to adverse reactions such as fainting, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, and arrests. Perform other related duties as assigned.
