This position will be filled at either Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 - $104,100 - $172,200
In this position, the selected candidate will work collaboratively with junior and senior engineers across multiple disciplines, including fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical, to deliver full-system design solutions. They provide mentorship, technical guidance, and leadership within team settings to ensure high-quality, integrated project outcomes. They provide support to operations and maintenance groups in regard to equipment operation and maintenance activities.
Engineers in this position serve as subject matter experts in nuclear facility systems engineering, supporting safety, Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), building controls, hydronic systems, and critical infrastructure. Responsibilities include performing equipment failure analyses, and replacement equipment evaluation and recommendations; and contributing to the design of building modifications, room renovations, and new structures. The role also involves developing expertise in pressure safety, piping supports, equipment installation, and the design of piping and HVAC systems.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 - $125,200 - $211,300
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be expected to work independently, act as lead to other engineers and groups, provide mentoring to less-experienced peers and colleagues, and bring expert-level technical expertise to the group.

Demonstrated ability to prepare and review technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems
Demonstrated ability to define and collect the usage, process, safety, and other requirements for the structure, system, or component design or analysis tasks, and prepare design concepts that meet the requirements
Demonstrated ability to develop design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable
Demonstrated experience evaluating and trending system and equipment health/condition
Demonstrated ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering interns and other engineers

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Demonstrated experience as a mechanical engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in facility related systems (i.e. compressed air, chilled water, vacuum, gases, and chemical systems).
Demonstrated experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of facility related mechanical systems.
Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting mechanical systems.
Demonstrated experience in application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment, to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, ASHRE, ASME B31.
Demonstrated experience evaluating and trending system/equipment health/condition.
Demonstrated ability to perform analysis and calculations required to support engineered solutions.
Ability to work independently with minimal guidance for assigned tasks and effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and craft personnel and to manage multiple tasks requiring varying resource needs and deadlines.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years' practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.
Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
