Summary The Medical Equipment Repairer will be assigned to the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service, VA Medical Center, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Miami, FL. Responsibilities Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Evaluates durable medical equipment and all mechanical devices utilized by patients to determine the safety of the device. Notifies management of a decision to issue a loaner piece of equipment, condemn the existing equipment, and working with the clinical staff to have an appropriate replacement device. Repairs, maintains, overhauls, and modifies the full range of electrically and mechanically operated durable medical equipment such as power wheelchairs, scooters, rollators, and other non-mechanical devices such as walkers. Determines equipment deficiencies, adjustments needed and the parts necessary to place each item in proper operating condition by operational tests, visual examination, and by use of a variety of measuring devices or electrical test equipment. Searches for equipment from mandatory or open market sources, selecting the most cost-effective item. Initiates orders and generated direct purchase. Inspects procured items. Performs clerical level work to acquire supplies and services to meet the purchase, rental, or lease needs of an organization. Applies conventional practices to resolve a variety of purchasing problems, such as inadequate or restrictive specifications, lack of multiple suppliers, urgent need, or insufficient price history. Disassembles equipment and repairs or replaces wiring, electrical elements, switches, etc. Repairs or replaces electric motors by soldering connections, replacing bearings, etc. Replaces damaged or faulty framework, timers, regulators, gaskets, and similar controls. Secures parts and supplies from parts room or salvageable equipment; fabricates simple parts such as gaskets, washers. Reassembles equipment, performs applicable tests, makes needed adjustments, and accomplishes applicable modifications to assure performance standards are met. Performs clerical or technical level work to procure supplies and service to meet the procurement requirements of the service. Processes a wide variety of procurement transactions related to complex contracts. Maintains stock levels of repair parts that will meet the needs of the service to provide expedient service to the patients. Handles consults and quotes for prosthetic repairs. Ensures the requirements of eligibility and entitlement to prosthetic devices are met. Renders decisions on client eligibility for prosthetic devices and reviews requests for prosthetic devices from a physician or a prescription. Procures or manages the procurement of prosthetic devices for eligible patients. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Lifts or handles items fifteen to forty-four (15 - 44lbs) pounds. Assignments involve standing, bending, or working from cramped or kneeling positions. AND WORK CONDITIONS: Works in a well-lit, heated, and ventilated shop area, in shelters or at workbench. Exposed to possibility of electric shock, burns, or injury from use of hand and power tools.
