Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing journey level work inspecting the construction of public capital construction and rehabilitation projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Inspection work is done on medium to large size projects such as major and minor streets, drainage systems, bridge constructions, and related activities. Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, high noise areas, dust, and unfavorable fumes and vapors. Exercises no supervision.

Essential Job Functions
Attends pre-construction meetings with City staff, engineers, contractors, and utility company representatives to discuss general information about new projects.
Reviews and interprets project plans and specifications to become acquainted with construction activities.
Maintains a daily log of construction and inspection activities to record job progress and all situations and problems relevant to the project.
Maintains quantity book for estimates of project costs and measurements.
Collects samples of construction materials used in project to send to testing laboratory.
Inspects construction sites to ensure that safety measures are in compliance with City standards and OSHA rules and regulations.
Utilizes surveying equipment to measure on-site construction grade levels with surveying instrument or laser beam, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing 50 pounds, to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
Meets with traffic section, barricade company, and other parties, to coordinate proper signage and detour routes.
Discusses errors on blueprints with the engineer and contractor for a field operation.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
One (1) year of experience in construction, surveying, drafting, or a related field.
Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor.
Ability to learn new skills.
Experience using electronic devices such as iPhone and laptop.
Ability to meet deadlines and follow standard operating procedures.
Experience documenting accurately, precisely, and uploading documents utilizing tech equipment
Ability to follow-up, problem solve, and escalate construction issues as needed.
Knowledge of basic mathematical skills.
Experience with Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.).
Applicant Information
Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge of codes, regulations, and ordinances related to the construction industry.
Knowledge of hazards, safety, and other OSHA regulations related to the construction industry.
Knowledge of principles and practices of the survey trade.
Knowledge of engineering mathematics.
Skill in utilizing tools and equipment used in the construction engineering and surveying trade, including Instrument/Level, Laser, Slump Cone, and Nuclear Density Machine.
Skill in utilizing a calculator.
Ability to interpret plans and blueprints.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
