Position Summary
Under the direction of the school leader, the English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher plans, organizes, and delivers instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and literature for students enrolled at Georgia Preparatory Academy. This role is responsible for developing an engaging and rigorous learning environment that supports students in achieving academic growth, literacy proficiency, and effective communication skills. The teacher ensures instructional alignment with Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) and prepares students for successful re-entry into their home school districts or postsecondary opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential functions of the job may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Demonstrate preparation, content knowledge, and instructional skill in teaching English Language Arts to students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
Plan, prepare, and deliver standards-based lesson plans and instructional activities that promote critical thinking, reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary development, and effective writing skills.
Integrate literature, informational texts, and writing assignments to build literacy across genres.
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction, to meet the needs of all learners.
Incorporate relevant technology to enhance student learning and engagement.
Assess student progress regularly through formative and summative assessments; provide feedback that encourages improvement and supports mastery of standards.
Maintain accurate records of student achievement, attendance, and behavioral data as required by law, district policy, and school regulations.
Establish and enforce rules, procedures, and classroom expectations to promote a safe and productive learning environment.
Participate in department, school, district, and parent meetings; collaborate with colleagues on instructional strategies and student support.
Prepare and submit required reports related to student progress, instructional activities, and compliance with DJJ and Georgia DOE requirements.
Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians regarding academic performance and student needs.
Support the mission of DJJ by fostering an environment that encourages accountability, personal growth, and academic achievement.
Education and Experience
Education:
Bachelor's degree in English, English Education, Secondary Education, or a related field.
Georgia Clear and Renewable Teacher Certificate; OR
Hold a Provisional Georgia Educator's Certificate AND be eligible to obtain a Georgia Clear and Renewable Teacher Certificate as required by statute.
Experience:
One to three years of teaching experience preferred.
Experience teaching in an alternative, correctional, or at-risk youth setting is highly desirable.
Minimum Qualifications

Strong knowledge of English Language Arts content, instructional practices, and pedagogy.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community stakeholders.

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction.
Commitment to punctuality, regular attendance, and professional responsibilities.
Meet professional teacher education requirements of the school, district, and state.
Certifications
Must hold or be eligible for a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) teaching certificate in English (6-12) or English Language Arts content area.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Working Conditions:
Normal classroom environment within a secure juvenile justice facility.
Physical Demands:
Routine physical activities associated with normal classroom instruction.
