Summary VA San Diego is hiring a Medical Instrument Technician to work part-time (20 hours per week) in Anesthesiology Service. You will function as a member of the anesthesia care team, and will be under the direct supervision of the Chief of Anesthesiology and the Chief Anesthesiology Technician. Responsibilities As a Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) you will assists anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and residents with routine anesthetic procedures. You will connect and operate invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment, anesthesia machines, ventilators, intubation bronchoscopes, and ultrasonic scanning devices. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performing daily checks in the process of monitoring equipment and anesthetic machines in the operating suite. Evaluating the suitability of all retrieved specimens for analysis and processing specimens for analysis. Generating laboratory results into the laboratory computer system and verifying results recorded in the system. Performing quality control and maintaining proper records for reports. Participating in the pre-cleaning, cleaning, SPD reprocessing process, and restocking for bronchoscopes, and pre-cleaning/cleaning of laryngoscope blades, TEE probes, the Glidescope Blades. Setting up all transducer monitoring equipment and calibrating equipment using sterile techniques for every procedure that requires such technology. Assisting in the total preparation for open heart and other major cases. Assembling and operating life support equipment including ventilators, cardiac monitors and laboratory instruments. Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG). Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment, often while the patient is anesthetized. Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures. Knowledge and understanding of arterial pressure line wave forms including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician or anesthetist of an impending life-threatening situation. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more difficult anesthetic procedures such as those found in inpatient settings with more acutely ill patients. Physical Requirements: The work requires long hours of continuous activity and considerable manual dexterity to assemble and set up equipment, instruments and supplies.
