Advanced Heart and Lung Failure and Transplantation Fellowship
The Cleveland Clinic's renowned Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute is pleased to offer a one-year comprehensive surgical fellowship in the management of advanced heart and lung failure and transplantation. This program offers an exceptional opportunity for qualified candidates to gain extensive hands-on experience at one of the most active and accomplished transplant centers in the world. Graduates of this program are highly sought after in the marketplace and several have become surgical directors of transplant programs within a few years of graduation.
Program Highlights
High-Volume Exposure: Over 6,000 cardiac surgeries annually, including:
140+ heart transplants and durable LVAD implantations
130+ lung transplants
Extensive experience with temporary mechanical circulatory support
Advanced Surgical Training:
Adult heart and lung transplantation
LVAD implantation and management
Complex cardiac reoperations and high-risk procedures with or without mechanical support
Acute Mechanical Circulatory Support:
Participation in SHOCK team evaluations for cardiogenic shock
Selection, insertion and management of temporary MCS devices, including Impella 5.5 and ECMO
Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion:
Access to our dedicated in-house EVLP lab for advanced lung transplant training

Clinical Responsibilities
Active participation in candidate evaluation and selection for heart, lung, and combined heart-lung transplantation
Technical surgical training in:
Heart and lung transplantation
Durable and temporary mechanical circulatory support
Perioperative care of transplant and mechanical support patients
Involvement in high-risk cardiac surgeries, including those requiring temporary MCS
Eligibility Requirements
Completion of one of the following:
Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency
4+3 Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency
Traditional Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship (2 or 3 years)
OR Graduation from a Canadian-accredited Cardiac Surgery Residency
Must qualify for a full Ohio medical license

Minimum salary: $82,826
Maximum salary: $115,138
