Responsibilities The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation for patients of all ages in the perioperative or periprocedural period Serve as an expert in airway management, including specialized techniques such as fiberoptic bronchoscopy, video laryngoscopy, and one lung ventilation Document and review patients' histories Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests Use specialized equipment including, but not limited to specialized monitoring devices, laryngoscopes, bronchoscopes, ventilators, and ultrasounds Evaluate for and perform anesthetics, including monitored anesthesia care, general anesthesia, and/or regional anesthesia as is appropriate for the patient Placement of invasive monitoring as is appropriate for the patient Provide acute and chronic pain management Prescribe and administer treatments in all aspects of the specialty Provide consultations or referring patients to specialists Conduct and supervise direct patient care Explain the risks, dangers, and expectations to patients Consultations and follow-up in both the outpatient and inpatient areas Plan and execute disease prevention and health promotion Participate in on-call schedule in a responsive and timely manner Collaborate and participate in multi-disciplinary care Timely response to clinical emergencies The anesthesiologist must have the full credentialing and qualifications required to serve in this role. This includes, but is not limited to, pre-operative patient exam and assessment, intra-operative care utilizing monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia techniques on American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Class 1 through Class 5 patients, and post-operative. Staff Anesthesiologist The anesthesiologist is responsible for direct provision of perioperative anesthetic care. The physician should be proficient and privileged in all aspects of anesthesiology. The anesthesiologist will provide perioperative care, including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anesthetic, administration and monitoring of post-anesthesia care in compliance with national accreditation standards. The anesthesiologist will provide expert consultation and guidance to CRNA, nursing, and other medical staff in the administration of anesthesia. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. The staff anesthesiologist provides anesthesia-related direct patient care in all functional areas of the OR, ICU, wards, and clinic settings as needed, to include on-call coverage.
