Summary This position is located within the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Montrose, NY, the Motor Vehicle Operator provides transportation assistance to the medical center in Castle Point, NY. Responsibilities Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds (to include cargo vans, trucks, wheelchair van, and buses, etc.). Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions. Transports patients and family members, supplies, materials, or equipment throughout the medical center complex and the local public area. Assures vehicle is not overloaded. Performs required operator maintenance. Maintains service records, completes delivery records, trip tickets, and compiles accident reports. Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles. Uncrates material as necessary and checks, counts, sorts materials, stocks and palletizes material, etc. Operates a forklift truck (of up to 10,000 or more pound capacity). Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the below requirements. This ability would be demonstrated by experience that required a thorough understanding of and following all regulations and laws governing the operation of various @types of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles to haul cargo and equipment, and transport passengers; and operating a variety of vehicles to include passenger buses and trucks. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Light physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of motor vehicles. Physical effort is exerted in operating, turning, backing, and controlling heavier vehicles. The work of this position requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time; bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds or more. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from others.
