Senior Manager, Automation Engineering - Performance & Tools
About the Role
Join Walmart's Accelerated Pickup & Delivery (APD) team to transform back-of-Store fulfillment through automation. This role focuses on scaling and optimizing our 30K automation initiative, where robots deliver products for digital orders, supporting the future of retail. You'll own Automation Performance, Insights and Tools including building automation potential and acceptance criteria for new systems, pinpoint performance loss opportunities with actionable insights, eliminate performance loss through test & learn mechanisms, and build associate facing and insights tools to maximize systems performance. This work will be integral to delivering our 30K automation initiative running at peak system performance and pick rate to solve one of retail's most critical challenges: efficient Store fulfillment.
What You'll Do
Own system acceptance : define acceptance testing plans, success criteria, and vendor-specific automation potential and acceptance goals (throughput, cycle time, quality, uptime).
Find and fix performance loss : conduct structured RCA (data + Automation studies), implement corrective actions, and verify impact.
Set & drive vendor expectations : translate specs into measurable SLAs, run scorecards, and lead performance reviews.
Lead efficiency initiatives : design experiments, optimize flow/bottlenecks, and standardize best practices across sites.
Instrument & analyze : track KPIs (e.g., OEE, pick rate, tote cycle time, queue latency), build trend/insight reports, and raise data-backed flags.
Build performance tools : develop dashboards, alerting, and diagnostics (telemetry pipelines, event logs, health scores, Pareto views).
Track to goal : maintain target vs. actual performance, highlight gaps, and drive closure plans with site and vendor teams.
Feed future designs : convert field learnings into requirement updates, reference designs, and design-for-performance specs.
Travel ~25% to stores, vendor sites, and trials.
Must Haves
Bachelor's in Engineering (Industrial/Mechanical/Systems or related); Master's/PhD a plus.
5-7 years in automation/intralogistics with a focus on system performance (throughput, cycle time, quality) and acceptance.
Expertise in RCA and continuous improvement (DOE, SPC, constraint/bottleneck analysis).
Hands-on with engineering/ops tools: SCADA , CMMS , log/event analysis; comfortable with SQL/Python and BI (e.g., Power BI).
Experience defining and enforcing vendor SLAs and running acceptance testing to release gates.
Strong communicator who can turn complex data into clear actions for Executives, Cross-functional and Vendor partners.
Nice to Have
Background with AS/RS, shuttles, AMRs, sortation, pick systems, or goods-to-person solutions.
Experience building telemetry pipelines and real-time dashboards; familiarity with alerting/observability concepts.
Simulation/digital-twin or capacity modeling experience.
Retail/e-commerce fulfillment exposure; pick-rate improvement programs at scale.
