Summary This position is located in the Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), VA Medical Center (VAMC), Durham, Medicine Service line. This position provides a wide variety of technical and administrative duties to support the Medicine Specialty clinics Nursing Staff Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include: Care in the Medicine Specialty Clinics: Obtains and documents patients' vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, actual weight, oxygen saturation, postural vital signs when indicated, and pain level). Able to set-up and use electronic thermometers, vital sign measurement equipment, and pulse oximetry. Recognizes and reports abnormal values to RN, LPN or the Licensed Independent Provider (physician/APP). Move patients from clinic waiting room to clinic exam room, verifying patient identification using appropriate identifiers Ensure written communication in the medical record is appropriately descriptive and complete. Prepare Veterans for examinations and procedures Transport specimens to laboratory or specified location Arrange and pass medical instruments and materials to medical/nursing professional for a variety of tests and procedures Page 2 of 7 Serve as chaperone for provider during exams if needed Observe, identify and respond to the Veterans' needs for care Perform skin puncture for blood glucose checks and monitors glucometer controls Move, lift, transfer and/or transport Veterans as necessary using proper equipment and correct transfer techniques Assist Veterans to ambulate and transfer safely Properly handle dirty critical, semi-critical and non-critical RME according to designated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Stock exam rooms with necessary supplies and RME, as per nursing instructions Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am to 5:00pm Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of medical information and/or terminology related to the diagnoses, treatment, and prevention of human injuries and diseases. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions and preventive health care measures. Understands and uses medical, surgical and/or dental terminology . Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years of successful nursing assistant or certified medical assistant experience, worked in outpatient setting or specialty care setting. Experience in obtaining and documenting vital signs, checking in patients, preparing and assisting with small procedures, assisting in moving, lifting, transferring and transporting patients. Experience in Performing skin puncture for blood glucose checks and monitors glucometer controls. Experience in stocking, restocking supplies and reusable medical equipment.
