About this Job
Position Overview:
The LSU Shreveport Student Success Center seeks an experienced and student-centered academic advisor to serve as Assistant Director of Academic Advising for Special Populations. This new position will play a key role in enhancing advising practices at LSUS, supporting the centralization and holistic delivery of academic advising to undergraduate students.
The Assistant Director will serve as a generalist advisor and supervisor, providing proactive, student-centered guidance to undergraduate students, while serving on the Academic Advising leadership team and overseeing advising services provided to various target populations.
The successful candidate will contribute to transformation efforts, developing support structures that increase student retention, success, and career readiness. This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Characteristics
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (or four years of related experience, plus three years of responsible managerial experience).
Minimum of three years' experience in academic advising in higher education.
Strong understanding of proactive, holistic advising models.
Knowledge of transfer credit evaluation processes, articulation agreements, and transfer admission requirements.
Working knowledge of Louisiana Board of Regents recommendations, requirements, and strategic goals.
Familiarity with student success initiatives, retention strategies, and academic planning tools.
Experience with student information systems and academic advising software.
Strong communication and collaboration abilities, exhibiting respect and collegiality aligned with a team-centered environment.
Proven customer service orientation combined with professionalism when managing multiple stakeholder demands.
Dedication to providing a welcoming and supportive environment that benefits all students, regardless of background or circumstance.
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Characteristics
Advanced degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, or a related field.
Eligibility to teach at the college level in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation standards (Master's degree or higher).
Experience teaching college-level courses, particularly to first-year students.
Experience supervising and training student employees or professional staff.
Job Duties and Other Information
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision:
Oversee advising services provided to targeted populations, including transfer students, student athletes, international students, online students, students in academic recovery, and other students with unique needs.
Lead and supervise a team of specialized advisors, including transfer, athletic, and online advising specialists.
Work closely with the Director of Academic Advising to coordinate advising services and develop strategies to improve support and enhance success for special populations.
Partner with support services offices to design strategies addressing student needs, such as students with disabilities, students on academic probation, or students in other specialized programs.
Collaborate with campus departments including admissions, financial aid, and academic units to streamline processes and enhance student success.
Serve on various committees and working groups to support transformation efforts.
Student Support & Engagement:
Serve as a generalist advisor, guiding students in course selection, degree planning, and academic progress across diverse majors and programs.
Develop and implement advising success initiatives, outreach programs, workshops, and advising sessions tailored to various target populations.
Teach at least one (1) first-year seminar course annually.
Administrative & Program Management:
Manage specialized advising documents, including degree audits, transfer credit reports, and advising records, ensuring data accuracy and confidentiality.
Manage transfer-related programs, articulation agreements, transfer pathways, and partnership collaborations.
Review course substitutions, waivers, and transfer credit evaluations to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Contribute to enhancing advising practices and supports for students enrolled in online accelerated programs.
Maintain knowledge of policies, regulations, and best practices related to academic advising, transfer credit evaluation, and advising support of target populations.
Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement:
Evaluate student progress and outcomes to determine patterns of challenges and potential solutions for removing barriers, particularly focusing on target population needs.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of targeted population support initiatives, preparing reports and recommendations for continuous improvement.
Engage in data-informed analysis to develop new and/or modified strategies for supporting students.
