Your Opportunity
This role is about making an impact on people's lives and the future of clean energy. You will leverage your skills and experience to be part of an innovative team and make a difference for our customers. This position offered is a 6-monh internship. As a HRR Fuel Plant Operations Production Planning Intern in Richland, WA, you will be part of the proven team in the Fuel Business Unit.
The Framatome fuel manufacturing facility in Richland, WA must upgrade and optimize production capacity in response to increasing customer demand in the BWR / PWR product line over the next 5 years. The production process involves a range of inputs of materials and components in combination with several discrete production lines and intermediate products, each with specific constraints due to limitations in the plant infrastructure and manufacturing equipment. To assist in optimizing production line delivery performance, an integrated model of the production flow would be of tremendous value in making informed decisions actions and investments (in a resource constrained environment) that would have the most benefits in increasing plant reliability while maximizing throughput and efficiency.
The model would need to encompass a wide range of production processes necessary to safely produce Uranium powder, fuel assembly components including pellets, rods, cages, and bundles. The model will be used to simulate the flow of materials, products, and product containers, through the various steps of the manufacturing process - from the receipt of all materials and components at the beginning of the process through the transportation of completed fuel bundles to customer locations. The model must also track the various by-products of the manufacturing process which need to be managed, stored, and dispositioned: Liquid effluents, scrap material to be recycled, waste material to be dispositioned, etc. The model will be used to identify plant bottlenecks and infrastructure limitations and define the targeted actions and / or upgrades to increase the overall capacity for production equipment and supporting activities within the end-to-end (system of systems) production process.
The model would not only be used to optimize production capacity, but also support assessments associated with new business to ensure that existing capacity is sufficient (based on actual operating performance of equipment and systems) or identify plant upgrades and the associated capital investments necessary to accept new business without inappropriate risks (or realizing negative consequences) for existing customers. As a stretch objective, the model could also connect with other Framatome component manufacturing facilities providing products to the Richland Facility to ensure that new customer decisions can be assessed across the Framatome family of sites supporting fuel production.
The model should be sufficiently intuitive to also be used for showing actual production operations across the system as a tool for situational awareness of the entire plant team and to support emergent events (such as the loss of site power or the loss of individual production line elements) to optimize production during recover operations. Together we will enable clean, safe, and economical low-carbon energy to meet the global ambition for a better tomorrow.
