Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I for the Bureau of Parks & Forestry, Landscape Services Division. This is an entry level position for the repair of portable equipment used by the Parks & Urban Forestry department. The candidate should be familiar with Zero-turn mowers, pull behind mowers, small mowers, and other equipment used in landscaping operations. Main responsibilities include daily sharpening of mower blades, tire repair, and assisting other mechanics with equipment repairs and operation of a service truck when needed. The candidate should have knowledge of bench and hand-held grinders, metric and standard sockets, and wrenches that are used for repairing equipment. Preventative maintenance on mowers will also be a part of this job.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Performs repairs and preventive maintenance to equipment by performing electrical repairs, inspecting, changing or replacing blades, tires, belts, hoses, oil, lubrication and filters, welding, performing tests and safety inspections, maintaining tires, rims and bearings, sharpening, repairing and replacing blades, ensuring proper operation of equipment, repainting, inspecting, operating and inspecting heavy equipment and delivering and collecting equipment.
Conducts minor repairs by performing daily maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance on frequently used equipment.
The candidate should have knowledge of bench and handheld grinders, metric and standard sockets and wrenches that are used for repairing equipment.
Performs maintenance support for emergency response team.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Minimum 5 months experience in basic mechanical repairs to landscaping equipment.
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Work hours may change seasonally

Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
