Solid Waster Laborer/Truck Driver

AMHERST Solid Waster Laborer/Truck Driver Operates a variety of
equipment utilized in construction; transfer station operations;
maintenance and repair activities; and performs a variety of semi
skilled tasks in the maintenance of street, water, sewer and storm
drainage systems. MAJOR DUTIES: Operates roll-off trash truck and other
departmental vehicles, including recycling trucks, snowplows, and
general-purpose trucks. Performs laborer and truck driving work as part
of highway construction or maintenance crew; may assist other divisions
as needed. Operates specialized equipment including trash compactor.
Assists in the maintenance of the recycling center and other transfer
station facilities. Assists public by directing them to proper location
for recycling and disposal. Operates scales and computer systems to
verify and bill customers at the transfer station. Uses equipment to
load, plow, remove, or dispose of snow. Performs manual labor tasks such
as hand digging, mowing, string trimming, and general maintenance of
transfer station. Performs routine inspections and preventive
maintenance on assigned equipment; Reports defects and performs minor
repairs, including fluid changes. Loads, moves, and disposes of bulky
items (e.g., mattresses, couches, TVs, refrigerators) manually or with
mechanized assistance. Adheres to all safety and security standards in
the performance of duties. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school education or
equivalent and 2 years? experience or any equivalent combination of
education/specialized training and experience demonstrating the ability
to successfully perform responsibilities of the position. Valid
Massachusetts driver?s license Valid CDL with endorsements for air
brakes and tanker Working knowledge of safety precautions and hazards
associated with equipment operation; Ability to observe proper safety
precautions Familiarity with tools, materials, and methods used in
street and utility maintenance and construction Ability to drive and
operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions Ability to
perform heavy manual labor in varying weather conditions Ability to read
construction specifications or blueprints Ability to classify soils
Ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers,
supervisors, and the public Strong communication skills and ability to
interact effectively with the pubic Ability to understand and follow
oral and written instructions Ability to communicate effectively

smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and
occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to
