The selected attorneys will be hired as Project Attorneys for a 24-month term with the possibility to extend for an additional 12 months. The Environmental Protection Bureau enforces state and federal environmental laws that protect New Yorkers' rights to clean air, clean water, and safe and healthy communities, and conducts investigations into violations of those laws. The bureau is focused on advancing environmental justice throughout the state, including addressing the inequitable distribution of pollution and other environmental health burdens, and associated health disparities. The Project Attorneys will join a team of attorneys and scientists representing the state of New York in a complex, multi-district litigation in which the state is pursuing claims involving environmental harms caused by toxic chemicals. We anticipate the project attorney will assist the team in all aspects of discovery and dispositive motion practice, including:- Drafting discovery requests and interrogatories;- Document review and development of factual record; - Taking and/or defending depositions; - Interviewing fact and expert witnesses;- Discovery motion practice; and- Briefing on any motions to dismiss and/or summary judgment motions.
Minimum Qualifications Qualifications:- Applicant should have at least three (3) years of experience litigating in federal or state courts, including writing briefs (or portions of briefs), performing document review, and conducting depositions or other witness examinations;- Self-directed with the ability to independently manage assignments, deadlines, and priorities; - Ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment and as a member of a team;- Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, particularly when engaging with other members of litigation teams; and- A demonstrated commitment to public service.
