Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. On the local side, AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases ranging from misdemeanors to homicides. On the federal side, AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes. The Civil Division further defends the United States in civil suits brought in the District of Columbia. Responsibilities If selected for this position, you will join the eDiscovery Unit of the Office of eLitigation in the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, a well-respected team that is responsible for providing support to civil and criminal litigation teams by performing routine litigation support tasks necessary to prepare for the management of electronic discovery. Typical work assignments will include: Consults with litigation team members (e.g., attorneys, investigators, legal support staff) to understand case needs and technical requirements. Organizes and prepares electronic files for processing utilizing specialized software applications. Builds and maintains document review databases for litigation team use. Ingest ESI, or loads image, native, or text files into document review databases; performs quality control on loaded files and addresses any identified issues. Uses basic document review database functions such as coding, tagging, basic searching, sorting, and filtering and advises litigation teams on these functions' use. Generates basic electronic discovery productions (e.g., Bates-numbered images with redactions and searchable text) that comply with production specifications and deadlines, including productions from document review databases. Performs quality control on electronic discovery productions and addresses any identified issues. Communicates regularly with litigation team members about the status of litigation support projects (e.g., processing, production preparation, etc.) and the time and resources needed to complete projects. Provides customer support services to case team members relating to their use of litigation technology applications. Such services include basic troubleshooting, user assistance, and occasional basic training in response to case team needs. Assists with preparing training materials for litigation technology applications. Uses hardware and software applications to copy electronic discovery productions (documents, audio/video, social media and cell phones) to and from external media or file transfer systems. Performs quality control on copies and addresses any identified issues Ensures litigation support projects are completed according to litigation team and industry standards, and that specifications and deadlines are met. Assists in maintaining litigation support inventory and tracks equipment (e.g., external optical media and readers, etc.). Maintains litigation support equipment in good working order. Trains users on equipment's use. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Qualification requirements as outlined below: To be qualified for the Legal Administrative Specialist (PRG) GS-09 you must have either one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level in federal service; or a master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related; or Superior Academic Achievement or a combination of education and experience. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing litigation support functions utilizing specialized software applications under the assistance of a senior or higher-grade employees. Examples of specialized experience include utilizing software applications to prepare common electronically stored information; communicating with team members to provide advice and customer service relating to the project, case and/or applications; generating basic electronic discovery productions; requesting, organizing and preparing hard copies for scanning; maintaining an accurate and current record of incoming case material; routing and storing electronic case materials in compliance with office policies and procedures. OR Education: a master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D, if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Superior Academic Achievement: Possess a Bachelor's Degree AND possess at least one of the following criteria: class standing in the upper third of the graduating class; an overall GPA of 3.0 OR at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in my major field OR based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; OR election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. OR Combining Education and Experience: a combination of specialized experience and graduate education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.
