Summary This position serves as an Inpatient Physical Therapist (PT) in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at The C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center located in St. Petersburg, FL Staff PTs at this level are responsible for providing assessment and treatment intervention. This full-time (40 hours) position requires Saturday and Sundays, but candidates have unique flexibility as to whether they prefer working an 8 hour shift or compressed 10 hour shift times. Responsibilities The Physical Therapist primary function is to provide acute inpatient care at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. The incumbent plans, develops, and implements comprehensive, routine treatment programs for individual patients or groups of patients to relieve pain, restore or enhance performance, and maximize ability to function. Performs appropriate assessments, evaluations, and treatments, involved in the prevention of physical disability, movement dysfunction, and pain resulting from injury, disease, disability, or other health-related conditions. The Physical Therapist reviews incoming referrals for appropriateness and independently evaluates patient's problems to determine their physical therapy needs through the use of standard tests and measurements adapting and modifying treatment plans to meet the needs of patients. The incumbent is under the general supervision of the PMRS Chief. Program goals and objectives are provided to the incumbent by the Physical Therapy Supervisor. This physical therapist works with patients to identify any of a variety of possible impediments, including safety hazards, access problems, and home or office design barriers. The physical therapist will suggest modifications to the environment (e.g., grab bars in the shower, ramps, raised toilet seats, increased lighting) that will allow the patient/client to improve functioning in the home, workplace, and other settings. Duties may include but are not limited to: GS-11 Level A therapist functioning at the GS 11 with full performance to GS-12 level is expected to make changes to the treatment intervention based on patient response to treatment in a manner that utilizes creative thinking and problem solving that goes beyond the typical diagnosis-based treatment pathways in order to reach maximal outcomes. The GS 11 to GS 12 level clinician will provide treatment to patients with the diagnoses of upper and lower extremity orthopedic surgery; degenerative conditions of the spine including spinal stenosis, spondylosis, and spondylolisthesis; mild to severely impaired patients with stroke and other brain injury; musculoskeletal disorders; central and peripheral neurological diagnoses; and cardio/pulmonary conditions status post-surgery or medical treatment. GS-12 Level A therapist functioning at full performance to GS-12 level is expected to make changes to the treatment intervention based on patient response to treatment in a manner that utilizes creative thinking and problem solving that goes beyond the typical diagnosis-based treatment pathways in order to reach maximal outcomes. At ALL Levels Establishes meaningful, realistic ad measurable therapeutic goals and designs a treatment plan to meet the goals established in the most efficient manner. Completes appropriately timed reevaluations for the patients and modifies the goals based on the information gained by reevaluation. Communicates effectively with medical providers as needed. The clinician is expected to provide physical therapy on VA supported virtual platforms as well as face to face interventions. The Physical Therapist will adhere to all patient confidentiality, HIPPA and cyber security regulations with respect to patient information in compliance with the Medical Center's "Patient Rights and Responsibilities". Serves as a resource person to the Community and/or the Facility in matters related to Physical Therapy, the delivery of health care, and the needs of the veteran population. He/She may be assigned to all program areas which are covered by the Service and provide professional, independent physical therapy services in the assigned area. The therapist is responsible for maintaining comprehensive knowledge and skills for each therapy area. Licensed PTs may provide oversight and delegate patient care responsibilities to a Physical Therapist Assistant, and/or delegate non-patient care duties to a non-licensed staff. PT's that are not licensed must practice under the close supervision of a licensed PT. Grade Determinations for Physical Therapist GS-12: GS-12 Experience, Education, AND Licensure (Submitted): In addition to the Basic Requirements, a Physical Therapist at the full performance GS-12 level MUST be licensed AND possess at least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level directly related to the position being filled.
