INTERNAL ONLY Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply.
Serve as a lead inspector for larger roadway and larger structure projects, conducting independent inspections on various construction operations using plans, contracts, standards, specifications, etc. and a variety of material testing devices to ensure compliance with project requirements. Maintains appropriate project records/reports. Perform a variety of complex surveying and inspection calculations. Supervises and trains lower level employees. Also requires familiarization with project plans, contract specifications and applicable standards. Perform a variety of office assignments such as checking pay records, haul tickets, force account, contractor's payroll, material received and payment estimates.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:
Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
Computer experience including office software and drafting software.
Additional Expectations:
The selected Applicant will be expected to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle. Knowledge and understanding of concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection and surveying. General knowledge in mathematics and ability to use a calculator to perform basic calculations. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Ability to serve as survey crew member and assist with project stakeout. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety toe shoes required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
