Department Summary
L144, the Model-Based Analytics Department within the Modeling and Simulation Innovation Center is seeking a Chief Engineer to serve as the Department's focal point across our technical domains: complex systems modeling and analysis, geospatial analytics, data science and analytics, computational social science, and computational finance. Candidates should possess an understanding of these domains as part of the department's current technical focus.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for helping to establish and maintain the vision for the Department's technology landscape, its technical quality and peer review processes, and technical outreach processes. The Chief Engineer will work with the Department Manager, Group Leads, and our Principal Staff/Technical Leads to establish incentive programs for technical innovation, technical outreach, technical quality and technical improvement. The Chief Engineer will also work with task, project, Department, and Division leadership to work shape and help brand our department and division, as well as guide and mentor staff toward opportunities to contribute to peer-reviewed publication, presentation, and technical standards development. The Chief Engineer position will have approximately 10-15% allocation across the year.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Cultivate strong external relationships and engagement with academia, industry, and research communities.
Advise internal and external sponsors on the Department's technical domains and the division's capabilities.
Engage actively in shaping work for the Department and the Division.
Lead, contribute, and grow focused research with academia, industry and via MITRE's Innovation Program; to include mentoring staff in doing this.
Develop (and enable department staff to develop) innovative, multidisciplinary approaches for modeling and analysis in the department's technical domains.
Provide expert analysis and/or develop research on issues related to one or more of the Department's technical domains (complex systems modeling and analysis, geospatial analysis, data science and analytics, computational social science, computational finance).
Advance MITRE thought leadership in the Department's technical domains and enable staff to keep abreast of industry and academia thought leadership in the department's technical domains.
Lead strategic outcomes to help ensure the Modeling and Analysis Innovation Center (MAIC) prominence and brand.
Actively participate as a member of the Division Technical Chief Engineers team.
Mentor and develop technical staff to and promote technical career path development and succession planning.
Help establish and maintain the Department's research and technical vision, strategy and execution plans.
Establish, maintain, and execute department's technical quality plan.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 10 years related experience and a Master's degree; or PhD and 7 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Extensive experience and expertise in two or more of the following technical domains: complex systems modeling and analysis, geospatial analytics, data science and analytics, computational social science, and computational finance.
Must Have Top Secret clearance in order to be considered.
Proven technical leadership experience on direct projects, strategic initiatives, and internal research.
Thrives in working in a technical environment with multidisciplinary teams on critical national challenges.
Passion for developing new technology, innovative approaches and analytics for solving national challenges.
Excellent analytic writing and verbal/presentation skills to senior leaders.
Excellent interpersonal skills, and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
Demonstrated experience working on or leading customer facing engagements.
Demonstrated experience shaping work with sponsors.
Demonstrated experience working on or leading research in one or more technical domains of the department.
Demonstrated experience in conference presentations, publications, and generating IP.
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated success in developing and executing applied research in both public and national security sectors
Deep experience in three or more of the department's technical domains.
