POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Full Time, 40 hours per week.
Location: 450 Columbus Boulevard in Hartford.
Monday - Friday.
8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Hybrid (combination of in-office/telework).
THE ROLE
As an Accounting Careers Trainee, you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience within the DAS SmART Budget Unit.
During your development program, you will train with the DAS budget team to:
Learn CORE-CT modules including running reports, processing and correcting journal entries/journal vouchers, verifying coding, approving requisitions, updating excel spreadsheets bi-weekly, and reconciling excel spreadsheets to CORE-CT. Learn how to budget multiple state appropriations for DAS throughout the fiscal year.
Assist with planning and budgeting for biennium and mid-year budget adjustments.
Assist with monthly CFSR, Annual GAAP, SEFA, and SWCAP reports.
Any other applicable tasks.
PROMOTION OPPORTUNITY
The length of the development program is determined by the experience and training requirements of the designated class and the prior experience of the incumbent. At the completion of the development program, incumbents must meet the experience and training requirements of the designated class. The program cannot be less than one (1) year and cannot exceed three (3) calendar years in accordance with C.G.S. 5-234.
Incumbents in this class will be eligible for reclassification to the designated class without competitive examination upon successful completion of the development program and satisfactory service. The salary for an employee who completes any of the above minimum requirements after initial appointment to the Accounting Careers Trainee job class will be adjusted commensurate with the schedule above and effective the pay period following the date the degree has been conferred or the pay period following the date the appropriate number of credits as indicated above have been earned.
For current state employees compensation will be in accordance with guidelines for computing salary adjustments set forth by the Department of Administrative Services, Determining Salary Upon Change in Class Manual.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position;
Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period;
Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles;
May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
Experience with Microsoft Excel, including functions such as tables, formatting, formulas, data manipulation, and pivot tables.
Experience communicating with individuals and teams via phone, email, or in person.
Experience with handling accounting and budget records and reports, including preparation, analysis, and reconciliation using financial software.
Experience with prioritizing work assignments.
