Summary The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) works in support of the SPS management team, and is the first line supervisor for assigned staff. They distribute and prioritize workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. The supervisor is responsible for all activities that occur in the department during their tour of duty and performed by their subordinates. The supervisor has the ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontaminations, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME. This includes receiving instruments, trays, etc., processing through decontamination, assembly, sterilization and building case carts. The supervisor will serve as the subject matter expert to guide staff through the proper procedures. They will also be responsible for checking the quality of the work being produced on their tour. Performs a full range of supervisor duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues. Monitors the status of the work being performed, and ensures all work adheres to established policies and procedures. Reviews work in progress and spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets the demands of the facility and quality standards. Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME) processed. The supervisory position is responsible for performance reviews, approving time to include leaves, taking corrective action, and the hiring and termination of staff. Provide information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Major duties and responsibilities of the position: Exercises direct supervisory responsibility over staff working at the GS-03-07 levels. Prioritizes and organizes workload based on demands and emergent needs. Responsible for ensuring compliance with established standard operating procedures, and manufacturer's guidelines relating to the continuous through SPS from decontamination through sterilization area to include proper preparation of instruments and equipment prior to distribution. Instructs employees on specific tasks and techniques and makes available instructions, reference materials, and supplies. Provides on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices. Distributes work assignments among employees in SPS and assures timely accomplishment of the assigned tasks. Exercises personnel management activities such as time and attendance approval, performance reviews, performance counseling, recognition, corrective actions, hiring and termination of employees. Provides updates to management on staff performance, progress,. training needs, and disciplinary problems. Reviews work performed. Resolves processing concerns and questions, and oversees the accomplishment of all rework. Establishes timelines during their tour to ensure work is completed prior to deadlines to ensure no delay to patient care. Performs competency assessments on staff on a recurring basis. Demonstrates a clear understanding of performing quality testing of equipment and processes, review documentation, and responds to any issues that occur. Hears and resolves complaints from employees, referring group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to higher level of authority when needed. Recommends promotions, reassignments, recognition of superior performance, retention or release of probationary employees or other changes of assigned personnel. Holds corrective interviews with employees, referring disciplinary problems to higher levels of management. Resolves informal complaints of employees and deals with union representatives on personnel matters. Provides technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the organizational unit. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-08 Physical Requirements: The position requires long periods of standing, walking, bending and lifting. The employee usually stands and moves from one part of the department to another. There is a frequent requirement for lifting baskets of stainless steel instruments weighing in excess of 25 pounds from floor level to chest level. Dexterity and strength are required for lifting and positioning RME. The employee regularly pushes loaded carts weights several hundred pounds and loads them into' elevators and through entryways. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and be able to shift priorities based on needs.
