Responsibilities Performs repair and maintenance tasks on equipment that are complex, have a greater variety of complicated components and parts and are used to provide heat and power to areas with critical and rigid requirements. Repairs electronic controlled burners, traces circuits to time devices, inside-outside thermostats and uses voltmeters, ampmeters, ohnmeters, and similar equipment. Operates one or more @types or a combination of automatic or hand fired, high-or-low pressure boilers to use in the operation of industrial facilities and equipment. Makes preventive maintenance inspections of oil fired heating equipment and components. Cleans and makes minor adjustments; checks for air locks and low water conditions; checks to assure proper draft; checks and replaces fuses; checks all pumps for proper performance. Repairs steam heating equipment, traps, valves, water regulators, feed pumps, condensate receivers and tanks. Installs, overhauls and tests all heating equipment on low and high pressure steam boilers, space heating boilers, and warm air space heating equipment. Repairs and overhauls pressure atomized and air atomized oil fired burners and oil fired space heaters. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Selective Placement Factor: Must possess a valid state and government driver's license and be capable of operating government vehicles from 1/2 ton to 1 1/2 ton trucks. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally over 50 lbs. Hoists, holders and pulleys are operated when removing and replacing large units. Frequently repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of the system worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, requiring stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling for long periods of time. Working Conditions: The incumbents of this position must be able to wear all @types of respirators, safety shoes, glasses, gloves, heavy aprons, asbestos gloves, hard hats, all @types of protective clothing. Works inside and outside, on tops of buildings, in hot or drafty spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Frequently is exposed to gas and smoke, soot, scalding water, steam and burns from contact with heated elements of the system. Works inside in constantly high temperatures from the boilers. Is exposed to the danger of boiler burst; carbon monoxide poisoning, scalds; and gas, oil, or sulphur fumes. Cuts, bruises and broken bones may results from accidents while working around machinery and equipment or while driving trucks. At times, must wear protective safety devices which are extremely uncomfortable when worn in hot weather.
