Job Description:
Engages in population-appropriate communication. Gives clear instructions to patients and family members regarding treatment. Where appropriate, involves family/guardian in the assessment, treatment and continuing care of the patient.
Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and seeks intervention when necessary. Plans care appropriately and identifies/responds appropriately to different needs different needs, such as psychological needs, religious and/or cultural norms.
Performs therapy, administers medication and operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of adverse reactions, abuse or neglect.
Performs and monitors patient progress and response to service. Assesses patients and makes appropriate recommendations based on outcomes of therapeutic interventions. Performs invasive/noninvasive therapeutic/diagnostic modalities within accordance with Colorado State Licensure guidelines and AVRMC Respiratory Care Department policies and procedures.
Correctly and accurately records all appropriate information in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) and accurately maintains department records. Hand off communication will be performed in accordance with AVRMC policy standards.
Educates patients on their disease states, wellness techniques and home care modalities where appropriate. Functions as a preceptor, working to provide a meaningful learning experience and environment for orientees and students.
Applies professional and technical knowledge to consult with physicians regarding cardiopulmonary status, therapeutic response and suggestions for further treatment and assessment. Acts as a resource via being a subject matter expert within their profession.
Shows professionalism and respect in response to leadership initiatives and interactions with colleagues, staff and customers of AVRMC.
Professionally and respectfully performs additional duties as assigned by the Department Director as well as Senior Leadership.
Appropriately obtains/maintains department/facility required education and certifications.
Maintains education requirements to maintain national credentialing so as to comply with Colorado state licensure requirements

Arterial Blood Gas Puncture and Sampling

Assistance with Bronchoscopy
Cardiac Resuscitation, Respiratory Arrest and Airway Management
Assist with Student Education
Medical Gas Therapy
Medication Therapy
Bronchial Hygiene Therapy
Percussion, Postural Drainage and Flutter Therapies
Pulse Oximetry
Nasotracheal and Pharyngeal Suctioning
Patient Education to include:
Breathing retraining
COPD Management
Smoking Cessation
Cord Gas Puncture and Sampling
Insertion of oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal and LMA devices
Assistance with Surfactant Administration
Outpatient Procedures to include:
Electrocardiograms (EKG) -- both inpatient and outpatient
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
Holter Monitoring / Mobile Cardiac Telemetry (MCT)
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Swab Testing
6-minute Walk Testing
Employee Mask Fitting
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Skills/Education
Current State of Colorado Respiratory Therapist license, required
Graduate of an AMA-approved school of Respiratory Therapy, required
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) -- Required for Full-time/Part-time, unless grandfathered in prior to 9/1/2024. Must be at minimum RRT-eligible upon hire, with completion of RRT credential within 3 months of hire.
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) -- Minimum required for PRN employment
Current BLS certification Required
The following is preferred upon hire, or successfully completed within six months of hire:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Neonatal Resuscitation Protocol (NRP)
Respiratory Therapists employed as of 9/1/2024 will be required to complete these credentials by 9/1/2025
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) PRN Wage Range - $33.08 - $49.63
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) PRN Wage Range - $35.27 - $52.91
