Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Responsibilities This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) position is assigned to the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, Imaging Service; General Radiology section within the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) will have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic examinations and procedures within the General Radiology section, with and without the use of contrast materials. The objective of these exams and procedures is to produce radiographic studies which are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by Radiologists to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions or lesions within the body so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be obtained. The responsibilities and duties of the Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (General Radiology) includes, but not limited to: Accurately operates a wide variety of imaging equipment to obtain examinations of acceptable quality, including Fluoroscopic and General Diagnostic exams, Portable Radiography, Portable Fluoroscopy, Operating Room and all other duties assigned. Works under the supervision of the Section Supervisor and Lead Technologist and rotates all responsibilities within the General Radiology section. Works independently on most exams, but confers with Radiologists and Section Supervisor and/or Lead Technologist on more difficult examinations. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology including location, appearance, and functioning of the major and minor systems susceptible to radiographic illumination. Knowledge of changes to systems and organs caused by common medical and surgical diseases. Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable or consumable solutions such as UGI's, BE's, Small Bowel, , Modified Barium Swallows, Venograms, Cystograms, Cholangiograms, Fistulagrams, Arthrography, etc. Knowledge of policies and procedures for practicing radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. Knowledge and adheres to Radiation Safety guidelines, properly determines applying technical factors to ensure ALARA dose optimization, positioning, required views, etc. to produce and satisfy requirements for diagnostic imaging. Records all doses of radiation for fluoroscopy and portable fluoroscopy exams in the technologist comment section in Vista and/or by generating and sending the dose summary report from the fluoroscopy equipment. Receives and interprets all radiology requests for accuracy, appropriateness; date desired and maintains a thorough knowledge of the ordering process in CPRS. Inputs pertinent information into the designated computer systems and has knowledge to register, complete, cancel and edit exams. Must be knowledgeable in computerized and digital radiography (CR/DR), and picture archiving and communications systems (PACS). Performs and completes imaging studies within the established guidelines for stat, pre- op, urgent and routine exams. Responsible for the quality of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs. The KSAs of a GS-07 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist are: Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality in the digital system. Knowledge of different contrast material required for the requested study. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, appropriate beam limitation to anatomical area, and employing lead shielding when performing standard radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures.
