Summary Supervisory Senior Social Worker has significant personnel management responsibilities for a medium size professional and non-professional staff, including support staff and professional staff GS-12 level and below. The Inpatient Medicine Supervisor is responsible for the professional and administrative management of the program within the Social Work Service. They provide direct clinical services with program coordination responsibilities. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to: Assumes the supervisory and administrative responsibility for the assigned social work staff that function within the Inpatient Medicine setting within the Social Work Service. Performs the administrative and personnel management function relative to staff supervised: Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff, clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance evaluations; Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance Works to resolves informal complaints and grievances Develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area Provides guidance to workers related to work and administrative matters Reviews and dispositions leave requests Assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations Provides direct patient care services to include psychosocial assessment, safety planning, discharge planning and appropriate VA and community referrals/care coordination Performs program coordination duties as appropriate and/or requested by supervisor, Chief, Social Work Service, or designee Administratively responsible for a clinical program providing treatment to Veterans in a major specialty area Oversees daily operation of the program, developing policies and procedures for program operation, and prepare reports and statistics for facility, VISN and national use Responsible for developing and monitoring staff compliance with practice, standards and guidelines on documentation, workload, data entry, ethical practice and service delivery Provides analysis and evaluation of clinical program data to identify system-wide trends and needs to enhance the quality of service Administratively responsible for clinical programming Provides leadership, direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, staff development and continuing education programs for assigned staff Initiate and conduct a variety of program or service audits and reports, including productivity assessments Oversee program operations and evaluations, identifying areas for improvement, gathering relevant data, assessing the data, developing and implementing ideas for improvement and evaluating efficacy of improvement efforts Develops, implements, evaluates and reports on program performance; including assigned measures, monitors, data and other metrics of interest. Graduates of schools of Social Work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A Doctoral Degree in Social Work may not be substituted for the Master's Degree in Social Work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify that the Social Work degree meets the accreditation standards for a Master's of Social Work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to Social Worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice Social Work at the Master's Degree level. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Grade Determinations: Supervisory Social Worker, GS-12 Education and Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines. Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services. Ability to provide staff training and development. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
