Job Description
Position: Construction Laborer
Location: McMurdo Station, South Pole or Palmer Station
Type: Full-Time, Contract,
Duration: Approx. 5 months
Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
Construction Laborer o Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed UnitedStates Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). ConstructionLaborers perform a variety of tasks in support of polar region construction projects,under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman, Construction Superintendent orConstruction Manager. Tasking is based on employee's prior work experience and ASCschedule requirements.
Position Responsibilities:o Load and unload equipment and materials used in constructiono Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazardso Assist in manual labor aspects of the projecto Dig and cut trenches and snow tunnelso Perform tasks requiring repeated heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, hauling,standing, walking, kneeling, stooping and squattingo Accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materialsused, and processes involvedo Advise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirementso Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind andextreme cold weathero Routinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues andsolve problemso Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicatethem effectivelyo Work directly with other departments to plan and complete taskingo Learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, material, and maintenance trackingapplicationso May deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods(McMurdo only)o Occasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, orassist other trades or departments with their taskingo Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management andQuality Assurance requirementso Participate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectiveso Participate in community programs such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking"(station clean-up), "GASH" (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling effortso Perform other duties as required
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:o High School diploma or GED- Expected Skills and Competencies:o Competent in operating power tools such as drills and chainsawso Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectivelyutilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applicationso Possess the competencies, willingness and ability to perform the duties of position- Preferred:o Experience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrialfacilitieso Experience working in remote locations or extreme environments
Physical and/or Other Requirements:o Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periodso Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF fordeployment to Antarcticao Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employero Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSFo Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up tothe safety regulation maximum as required by the position.o Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing inand out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required bythe position.o Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.o Valid Driver's License issued in the United Stateso Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: USCitizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
