Summary The Senior Social Worker is assigned to Social Work Service and is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing social work activities in assigned segments of the Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences (MH&BS) Section of the service. The incumbent accepts and supports the guiding principles of the Medical Center, performing assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, outstanding customer service, and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving Veterans. Responsibilities The Senior Social Worker actively supports and functions as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in both the Trauma Recovery Program (TRP), a specialized outpatient treatment program providing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment services, and the Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP), a specialized outpatient treatment program providing substance abuse use disorder (SUD) treatment services, within MH&BS. The Senior Social Worker must use a high level of skill in assessing and treating the complicated psychosocial problems of Veterans referred to TRP and SATP programs. The incumbent practices at the advanced level and has specialized knowledge of practice typically related to PTSD, SUD, and their comorbidities. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Having a high level of skill and expertise to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans in the TRP and SATP and/or their families. Independently completing comprehensive psychosocial and diagnostic assessments to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families. Conducting ongoing assessments and updating treatment plans as clinically indicated and upon completion or change in the course of the psychosocial intervention. Routinely and frequently using specialized outcome measures, such as the PTSD Checklist (PCL) and Brief Addiction Monitor (BAM) to measure effectiveness of treatment and treatment outcomes. Independently delivering evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD and other comorbid mental health disorders with high fidelity. The format of these interventions may involve individual, group and family counseling. Actively participating as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and actively participating through collaboration with Veterans and family as well as interdisciplinary treatment team members in the development and implementation of a resident centered treatment plan. Possessing a working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures, including acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology. Must also have a thorough knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). Serving as a liaison between Veterans and/or their families and VA and community resources in order to ensure thorough delivery of services. Appropriately utilizing principles of human growth and development over the life span and will be able to assist Veterans in coping with the loss and grief experiences from disability and terminal illness. May be required to work an irregular tour-of-duty and/or on weekends/holidays as the need arises. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. GS-12 Senior Social Worker Experience/Education. The candidate must have at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty. Licensure/Certification. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
