Responsibilities Duties for this position include, but are not limited to the following: Provide supervisory leadership for management of the Emergency Department. Provide quality patient-centered patient care to all patients presenting to the Emergency Department at the Joseph M. Cleland Atlanta VAMC. Serves as a resource person to other staff and acts a leader in developing standards of care. Demonstrate skills in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs. Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in the Emergency Department in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management. Assist with oversight of the ongoing and focused professional practice evaluation process for all subordinate LIPs. Include patient/family/significant other/health care provider in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plan and in planning care on a continuum; assists staff in the process of mutual goal setting. Exhibit leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal. Participate as a peer reviewer in the peer review process when requested. Participate in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment plan and discharge plans of patients in the Emergency Department. Assist with reviewing and ensuring compliance with assigned pay for performance metrics and completion of annual and biannual proficiency reviews with subordinate LIPs. Systematically evaluates patient care programs in the Emergency Department. Complete all medical record documentation in the current electronic medical record within prescribed timeframes. Provide guidance and support to the nurse practitioners and physician assistants assigned to the Emergency Medicine section. Assist with oversight and maintenance of VISN and national programs as assigned. Participate in the selection of new staff using concepts of cultural emersion and seeking desired behaviors to pick the candidates with the best probability of being a best-fit employee. Promotes activities with peer review, career development and professional enrichment for subordinate employees. Revise work schedules and assignments on short notice to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in prescribed workloads and deadlines. Working with chiefs of other services/sections to enhance operation, streamline care delivery and improve outcome for patients presenting to the ED. Support the academic mission and work with academic affiliate to continue support of teaching opportunities in the Emergency Department. Provide significant input into the preparation of the departmental budget and strategic planning. Demonstrate commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals of the Joseph M. Cleland Atlanta VAMC. Assist with service recovery and resolving patient concerns and encouraging the implementation of best practices in customer service. Adhere to all information security and privacy measures set by VHA and the Joseph M. Cleland Atlanta VAMC. Serve on committees as needed/assigned. It is expected that the incumbent will allocate 40% of their time to administrative (management) and supervisory duties, and 60% to clinical responsibilities. Report to the Emergency Medicine Section Chief. Serve as acting chief of the section in the absence of the section chief. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
