This is professional engineering work to protect or improve air, land, and water resources in order to provide a clean and healthful environment.
An employee in this class works under the supervision of a higher level officer, but is expected to work with a minimum of supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities:
DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE):
Examines and evaluates plans and specifications for environmental engineering structures, system and operations.
Participates in or maintains indirect controls over the technical aspects of environmental engineering activities, such as air pollution, food and milk control, general environmental sanitation, housing, industrial hygiene, institutional hygiene, ionizing radiation, rural and recreational sanitation, shellfish sanitation, solid waste disposal, swimming pools and bathing beaches, vector and rodent control, wastewater collection and treatment, water resources, and water supply.
Engages in planning and conducting detailed environmental engineering field surveys and studies involving necessary laboratory services.
Utilizes educational methods to secure acceptance of methods or procedures for control of environmental health problems of community or industry.
Provides technical assistance and advice to the public, public officials, industrialists, architects, and consulting engineers.
Consults with subordinate engineers and acts as a lead worker to other professional and clerical personnel in environmental engineering activities.
Assists in the development and presentation of information to be used as evidence in legal action.
Develops and administers a major program in the field of environmental engineering, including the preparation of plans, budgets and reports.
Performs other related duties as may be required.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master's Degree in the Engineering field, related to Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Sanitary Engineering and one (1) year work experience.
OR
A Bachelors' Degree in any of the above related fields and three (3) years related work experience.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent may be required to obtain a scuba diving certificate, six (6) months after employment with agency.
PROFESSIONAL LICENSE:
Possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate, or eligibility for the Engineer-in Training Certificate with certificate to be obtained within one (1) year after appointment.
