Summary The incumbent of this position is a working leader of the General Support Shop at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC. Responsibilities Duties include, but not limited to: The incumbent, as a leader, obtains needed information on decisions from the supervisor and relays the decisions to the affected personnel on problems or questions to facilitate the effective accomplishment of work assignments. The incumbent communicates with other shops to see that needed materials and tools are available and those necessary tasks requiring coordination are being completed in accordance with his supervisor's instructions. The incumbent reviews drawings and specifications for new construction projects and makes recommended changes as the building subject matter expert. The incumbent performs inspections on new construction and renovation projects as needed. The incumbent, as a working leader, must be knowledgeable regarding all underground utilities, building utilities, building locations; procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives, such as safety and housekeeping rules and hazardous materials. Incumbent will have a thorough working knowledge of, and ability to communicate to others, the safe working requirements for construction and maintenance. As a working leader, the incumbent is responsible to the supervisor for non-supervisory work assignments that are of the same general kind and level as that done by the regular group led. The incumbent of this position is under the immediate supervision of the General Support Shop Foreman. The incumbent, on a regular and recurring basis, leads 6 woodcrafters (WG-10), 3 maintenance workers (WG-4), 4 painters (WG-9), l sign shop maintenance worker (WG-7) and 2 motor vehicle operators (WG-6). Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be in good physical condition to perform assigned work. Physical exertion, such as lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes, is required. Physical efforts, such as walking, climbing, crawling and bending and strains such as working in confining spaces or in crouching or stooping positions for extended period of time are encountered much of the time. The incumbent is required to perform work from elevated platforms, ladders, and/or man-lifts. Work areas may be located at extreme heights. Must have color vision, good hearing, and manual dexterity. May work in adverse weather conditions. Working Conditions: The incumbent must often perform work under unpleasant, disagreeable, or hazardous conditions. He will normally be expected to work outdoors. On some jobs the incumbent will work in dusty, dirty, drafty, and noisy conditions. The equipment and tools used are of the nature that requires a high special care and alertness to avoid injuries. Incumbent may be exposed to high temperature, steam pipes, close ventilation while working in areas such as manholes, crawlspaces and attics. Incumbent may be exposed to high voltages in the normal course of duties, as well as electric shock hazard. Incumbent will use appropriate tools and protective equipment for each task as required by policy and applicable national codes.
