The Colorado Mental Health Institute in Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds and over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

The Medical Services Section exists to promote and protect the health of patients and staff by overseeing, providing, and coordinating all medically related care and clinical analyses necessary for the proper evaluation and treatment of the hospital's patients, and by managing the infection control, employee health, and emergency response programs for the hospital.
The Physical Therapy department provides professional-level physical therapy expertise and treatment to CMHHIFL patients.

Description of Job
This position involves expert evaluation and consultation for patients needing physical therapy services. It oversees all clinical and administrative activities within the physical therapy department. The physical therapist in this role serves as the supervisor, providing clinical supervision to other staff member(s), as well as managing administrative tasks, performance management, training and development, quality assurance, and compliance. Other duties include:
Primary Job Duties
Clinical Physical Therapy:
Provides advanced clinical physical therapy services, including patient evaluation, treatment planning, and implementation of evidence-based interventions to improve mobility, function, and quality of life. T
Requires a high level of clinical expertise and independent judgment to deliver comprehensive care across a broad spectrum of patient conditions.
Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and coordinate patient-centered treatment plans that promote optimal recovery and functional outcomes.
Assesses physically ill clients who are also mentally ill, per physician order, by reviewing medical history, interviewing the client, and performing tests and measurements.
Analyzes the data to create and administer a physical therapy treatment program, unique to the client, to restore maximum function, relieving pain, and prevent or limit physical disability.
Exercises judgment and resourcefulness to interpret existing guidelines and adapt treatment approaches as needed, particularly in response to emergencies or urgent clinical situations.
Reassess the client prior to each treatment and his/her response to treatment after each session. Modifies treatment plans and goals as the client's condition changes.
Documents the assessment, treatment, procedure, response, progress, re-assessment, and discharge summary in the electronic health record (EHR).
Communicates with internal and external medical personnel to maximize the outcome of the client's treatment program while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
Trains hospital staff to assist in the position in the clinical setting and to assist the client with the therapeutic exercise program. Instructs the client and chaperone in the correct use of treatment equipment and supplies.
Educates staff in lifting, turning, and walking clients, and in movement precautions of post-surgery clients.
Physical Therapy Clinic Administration & Supervision:
Serves as the Physical Therapy Supervisor, overseeing daily clinic operations and providing leadership to other Physical Therapist staff.
Responsibilities include scheduling, caseload assignment, performance evaluations, mentorship, compliance monitoring, and quality assurance activities.
Ensures the delivery of high-quality clinical services, adherence to professional standards, and alignment with departmental goals.
Participates in program development, staff training, and communication with leadership to support operational effectiveness and client care excellence.
Serves as the Physical Therapy department director, overseeing all administrative, clinical and supervisory operations of the Physical Therapy department.
Develops and maintains the Physical Therapy Department manual, which provides guidance for all departmental operations.
Disseminates and maintains clinical documentation in accordance with hospital and medical record practice standards.
Maintains treatment statistics including tracking use of equipment supplies, the @type of diagnoses of the clients, and number of treatments per client.
Participates in ad hoc committees and treatment team planning when client mobility and safety is a concern.
Maintains files of diagram exercise programs which are modified for individual clients and provides copies for the client.
Maintains a file of instructions for each piece of equipment or exercise supply used in the clinic.
Schedules clients and makes decisions about changes to the schedule depending on clinical need.
Submits a billing sheet for each client's treatment reflecting the diagnosis and the treatment rendered;and maintains a daily treatment log in the clinic reflecting this information.
Directly supervises and mentors other physical therapy staff, ensuring high-quality client care and professional development.
Provides guidance, oversight, and evaluation of physical therapist's clinical work, including client assessments, treatment plans, documentation, and compliance with hospital protocols.
Evaluates and manages performance through evaluation, feedback, mediation, planning, and progressive discipline.
Ensures physical therapy staff follows evidence-based practices and Trauma-Informed Care principles when treating clients.
Provides on-the-job training, in-service education, and conducts regular performance reviews, offering feedback and recommendations to enhance clinical skills and promote professional growth.
Monitor and ensure training requirements are met.
Maintains and updates skills and knowledge through continuing medical education, professional literature and in-house training.
Independently ensures current, unrestricted physical therapy license in the State of Colorado. Submits a copy of the license to supervisor without prompting.
Other department related administrative and supervisory duties as assigned.
Maintain a Safe Environment:
Responsible for ensuring a safe, clean, and hazard-free environment for patients, staff, and visitors within the physical therapy clinic. M
Monitoring equipment functionality, maintaining infection control practices, adhering to safety protocols, and identifying potential risks within the clinical setting.
Involves proactive participation in safety audits, emergency preparedness, and continuous education to promote a culture of safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
Disinfects items used each treatment day. Quarterly, cleans each item present in the therapy clinic and documents this on the cleaning log maintained in the Physical Therapy office.
Secures cleaning chemicals in an area that is not accessible to clients.
Tracks use of equipment, supplies, and linens, and reorders as needed.
Alerts medical clinic personnel if treatment will be performed in an area outside of the therapy clinic.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
Current, valid Colorado State licensure or certification related to the work assignment
Three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Clinical Physical Therapy Practice - Direct patient care as a licensed Physical Therapist
Specialized program expertise - serving patients with mental health diagnoses and complex medical needs
Leadership and program oversight in a hospital, therapy or rehabilitation setting
Interdisciplinary team collaboration in clinical settings
Regulatory and compliance knowledge - clinical documentation standards
Operational and administrative skills
Clinical experience in physical therapy evaluation, treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions for diverse patient populations, including individuals with mental health conditions and complex medical needs.
Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop department staff.
Effective communicaiton and interpersonal skills
Familiarity with adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and mobility aids.
Strong therapy documentation skills, including accurate, timely, and compliant clinical records.
Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
Experience in scheduling, resource allocation, and workflow management.
Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality assurance.
