Responsibilities Deputy Chief of Staff - VA Long Beach Healthcare System In the vital role of Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS), you will report directly to the Chief of Staff (COS) and serve as acting COS in their absence. Executive Representation: Acts on behalf of the Chief of Staff in all aspects of administrative leadership, including serving as a member of key managerial bodies and the organized medical staff, ensuring compliance with established bylaws and policies. Clinical Service Oversight: Provides comprehensive oversight for recruitment, retention, resource management, and clinical practice operations across all Clinical Service Lines under the purview of the Chief of Staff. Collaborative Decision-Making: Participates in high-level decision-making and policy development through close collaboration with other members of the medical center administration, service chiefs, and interdepartmental supervisors. Supervisory Leadership: Directly supervises personnel to ensure achievement of organizational goals, including task assignments, performance reviews, and all aspects of administering personnel functions such as leave management, labor relations, and disciplinary actions. High Reliability and Patient Safety: Plays a key leadership role in advancing the organization toward high reliability, supporting a culture of safety, zero harm, and the deployment of effective process improvement tools. Committee Leadership: Chairs and actively serves on various committees, workgroups, and task forces at both the facility and VISN levels; assumes the Chief of Staff's role in their absence. Operational Excellence: Develops and implements initiatives to improve patient flow, access, and measurable clinical outcomes. Clinical Excellence: Maintain a portion of clinical practice with direct patient care and active clinical privileges through the Medical Staff Office. Quality Improvement: Drives the adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to elevate the quality of care delivered. Strategic Clinical Development: Creates and oversees clinical strategies to expand unique Veterans' services and increase the complexity of care provided. Resource Optimization: Ensures effective use and stewardship of institutional resources through strong clinical leadership and strategic planning. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: The ideal candidate will have a record of clinical, academic, research, and administrative experience fostering inter-institutional relationships in an academic setting along with proven managerial skills in a health care environment. Must be a board certified physician. Leadership experience and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) experience is preferred. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
